Maybe I'm just being too logical again, but that seems to be the way to do it.

The Star-field effect at the beginning and end of the film, but since it would have taken a LOT of money to make that retro addition, I understand why it was not part of the 2010 version. Lasers, that is missed many times during the show. Disney could have found a way to have Lasers, maybe not the exact version that was offered in the late 80's, but still, when you can buy a Laser pointer for 99 cents or less, they could have found a reasonable priced option for the lasers. Then the Fog, another effect that they could have done, if they were willing to spend a reasonable amount of money (not outrageous). Heck, they could afford them in the late 80's, how much does "80's" tech cost in the 21st Century? Alas, it looks like Disney took the cheap way out...

As I understand, it was a fairly expensive effect, involving a "dump box," filled with fog, cued to pour into the thetaer through the screen on a fairly precise cue. Assuming the mechanism was removed for HISTA, I am not surprised it wasn't replaced. (P.S. "Tocks" is a Tiggrlism.)

Design and testing would cost more $$. They can use one of the 4 simulator in DL. I don't think they use all 4 at the same time anyways.

They could have added both to the movie itself - after all, it is a 3D movie. Starfield - before the movie starts, a standard spotlight projector with a starfield template could have been displayed. As the light fades on the spotlight starfield, the movie starts up with a 3D starfield.

The big change I saw today from back in the day: the 3D effects have less impact on the audience. Very few people swatted at the asteroid or Fuzzbug, and almost no one squealed at the Supreme Leader's nails. The other big change: MJ was a curiosity on his way out of vogue back when the show closed. I was kind of a nut for buying Dangerous, and a lot more of a nut for buying HIStory. (Record sales say otherwise, but I'm talking about pop culture buzz.) Today, everyone cheered MJ, cheered the moonwalking, cheered the pelvic thrusts even.

BTW, I love when the "Flock of Seagulls" hairdo guy transforms on the left (gets a big laugh both time I have seen new Eo, in that he screams 1980's)...then, note, on the LONG SHOT, it's a different dancer coming in from the left side!
