However, wasn't HISTA also 70mm? And that looked really awful - dark and muddy. Maybe they just didn't change the film often enough. That's the beauty of digital, it doesn't degrade over repeated playings.

Current digital projection techniques (even IMAX digital) still fall way short of 70mm from a resolution and clarity standpoint. I do agree that the comparative disadvantages of digital projection compared to film are often masked quite a bit by the pretty much complete elimination of noise from dust, scratches, film warping or breaks, etc. In most cases, I do think these advantages probably justify a conversion to digital. Since "Captain EO" was shot on 65mm film (the extra 5mm on the projected prints is for the soundtrack), I do think it is the right choice for Disney to stick with 70mm projection. At the current level of technology, switching to digital would lose way too much of the recorded content quality. I just hope Disney does the right thing and replaces the print fairly regularly. For future theme park projects, I do think it would likely be wise to film and project in digital, if for no other reason than the durability. Theme park movies tend to have very frequent showings for a very long period of time, so they do tend to be very susceptible to print damage. -Jeff

When the crowd falls off, I hope Disney comes up with something new, and maybe not a 3D film to replace it. And if it is a 3D film, not the same old Fitzgerald formula of something gone wrong.
