Brainstorming does require open feeling freedom to express thoughts, however, some have to be dismissed in order to maintain a clear vision. Too much including of things that just will not work, only create confusion with no real ability to reach a consensus. Right? Maybe? Not a chance? In any brainstorming session.."blocking" results in discussion where the 'idea' person gets the opportunity to defend their idea and others get to add to it, by I would assume "wimping".

Phrases like "It'll cost too much" or "Guests won't like it" or "It would take too much time" are common. 'Blocking' is typically jumping on another person's idea, sometimes starting with the phrase 'No, you can't do that because...' In a true, creative brainstorming process, the goal is to get as many ideas as possible into the mix. Once the ideas are generated and put together, you'll have time to toss out stuff that 'won't work' and things that are 'too far out' -- but for the pure 'generating of ideas' process, it's fun, and actually very useful, to just run with ideas -- no matter how silly or far out they may be. It's sort of like "House" when he has his white board and is asking for ideas from his staff. Of course, Dr. House is jerk and typically blocks their responses -- causing them to get frustrated and shut down. Many people either don't have the ability to brainstorm, they don't understand it, or haven't had enough practice in brainstorming. It's easy to get out of practice (myself included) as evidenced by this particular thread and brainstorming new ideas for the 'Carousel of Progress' Phrases like 'The only way it could work' and 'I disagree' and 'I don't see how they could effectively do that' and 'I'm just realistic' and 'isn't going to happen.' (some of my own comments are in there!) help to dissolve the process too. People become shut down, become frustrated, and they don't want to share. Counter to what you want to have happen in brainstorming. I see it all the time in the organization I work with. Someone throws out an idea for a fundraiser, and immediately they are hit with 'that won't work, because...' or 'what about what our customers say?' or 'who's going to collect the money'? or 'what color will the decorations be?" As a result, fewer people speak up with new ideas, because they don't want to get struck down -- and they just keep their ideas to themselves. Anyway, I'm not any sort of guru of brainstorming, I learned much of what I know and practice from a former colleague and Disney Imagineer. It's a process I had the pleasure to watch in action many times, and enjoyed how it works in the creative world -- and also outside the creative world too.

Brainstorming by your definition is one sided conversation. You say your idea and somebody else states theirs. There is no back and forth, no agreement or disagreement. Until blocking and whining jump in there it is not a discussion. Lack of feedback on an internet forum will stop all participation in my opinion. So when on a discussion forum, to say...it won't happen or what if this or that, wouldn't that be the building block of discussion? I might block and idea with an example of something that you never thought about. You look at is as stifling your creativity, but if it wouldn't work your creativity is going to stifle itself eventually. By processing the yin and yang of thoughts someone smarter than me, perhaps, will be able to piece it all together and see the true path. But this is a completely different thread of "discussion" then this particular thread came into existence to discuss. And it's giving me a headache.

But with this being a discussion forum, people are free to agree or disagree with whatever idea comes along. Personally I'm not much into the "Hey, Disney needs to create THIS attraction and put it HERE because . . ." It just seems like a huge waste of time. But some people enjoy that sort of thing, so more power to 'em.

So I have absolutely no problem with people talking about where some rides would be better suited. It adds some intrigue to the whole thing.
