Looks like Cars may very likely coast along further than Monsters!

I would hate to be Disney right now.< of course we'll just ignore the fact that Cars ran about $120M to produce whereas the closest thing to a straight answer one can get form Disney is that potc 2 cost $200 - $225M to produce -- possible as much as double Car's -- a little thing called profit margin. Disney paid the right price to get Lassiter and his creative force, it was badly needed to reinvigorate the Disney animation team .( no more Home on the Range's)...and keep the stable of characters created by PIXAR ..so they are not in court in the future over marketing rights like they are with the Slesinger's

Good for a total 218 million so far. Whether it'll catch Toy Story 2 or Monster's Inc remains to be seen. P.S. I think the point has been made in this thread about whether or not this is a disappointment.

The Incredibles stuck around for 11 weeks... I wonder how long Cars can last?

I also have to say that an eleven week run is (pardon the pun) simply incredible. I don't think that many movies could ever come close to that much time in theaters. (Now here come the stories about how many years the Sound of Music was in the theater near you) Also, after having seen it twice outside, I was very impressed with the sound. There was nothing wrong with the sound the other times I saw it, but there was no practical way to get surround sound, and this had a really good ammount of it. There were also little things in the background that I couldn't hear before, that made some other things make a little more sense.

Cars did well, ONLY because another film did badly!) Then, the fact that Cars has stayed in theaters and has earned over $200 million is largely meaningless because (wait for it)... Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest earned over $200 so quickly. Yep. Cars is still a major disappointment, because PotC earned it's money up front. And that, my friends, is spin in its purest form.

FYI, it looks like "X-Men: The Last Stand" has concluded its domextic run. It's not listed on Box Office Mojo's theatre count list for this week. That would put its final domestic take at $232,631,145; "Cars" can definitely reach that figure and reach the number 2 spot for the year.
