In fact by Thursday it will have caught up with what Monsters Inc had made at that point, and with Monsters Inc final tally at over $250 million, Cars could have quite a lot of territory ahead of it.

The top grossing animated film for 2006 -- "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown" -- is currently at $193 million. I guess they were hoping for a wider audience? Meanwhile Cars keeps chugging along, bringing in a very nice third weekend. At this point it's tracking right along with Monsters Inc and ahead of Toy Story 2. That means depending on how well it fares against Superman Returns and POTC, Cars could still make in $245-250 million range.

A $120m movie that takes a month to get to $200m domestically is not a home run by any stretch of the imagination.
