It would have been rediculously expensive. With any project, one of the most expensive and most time consuming parts is the earthwork. Just look at Carsland. It was many many months (over a year even?) between when the bulldozers tore out the old parking lot surface and the vertical construction started. Digging holes is expensive and takes a long time, especially for big ones. The pit for Luigi's was a major part of the first phase of the construction, so lowering this tank down would have added a lot to an already expensive project.

"Disney's apparent lack of concern as to how the "backside" of their projects looks in relation to neighborhood surroundings doesn't sound very environmentally friendly."

That's all included in any construction project's Environmental Impact Report, which is released for public comment long before construction begins. Since it is a commerical area, the visual intrusions aren't as big of a concern. However, I'm sure that the Anaheim Resort District will have some things to say about it (and likely already have).

It will be interesting to see what they do to the very-visible backside of the rockwork. I doubt they will make it look like rocks, but they will need to do something more than just leave it exposed like a movie set. They could put a wall up to cover the supports, similar to what they did for Everest in WDW, but that would still look a little strange. It will be very interesting to see what they do to make it work within a realistic budget without devalueing the magic like Toontown does from certain viewpoints.

Where will you even be able to see this thing, ultimately?

Apparently, not from within DCA, due to the large rockwork.

Not really from the Candy Cane unless you know where to look, as the windows face the other way, right?

So from where, then? When driving down Katella? Doesn't seem like a problem to me.

Know where to look? Are you kidding? Look at this view from the Candy Cane parking lot:

Well, "know where to look" wasn't phrased right. I meant that you see it walking in, but not from the rooms, so it shouldn't be a "thing" for your stay there, I wouldn't think.

Still, I think painting it in a more whimsical way would help - hell, maybe the CCI can call it "park view."

    that's what I was imagining ...

I am hoping the cars land space will have a similar scale and visual impact as the TDS caldera. I can' t wait to see cars land complete and visit in person.
