I know all about the costs. And when I see 1950s ranch homes in the South Bay area (two bedroom, one bath, carport) selling for over half a million (used to be even more, obviously), I just shake my head and wonder where all the fake money came from. ~Torrance isn't magical!~

Look at the costs in Anaheim, not exactly a paradise-- $500K -$700k for small ranches ! Irvine $1.5M for a very very averag 4 bedroom home..and we won't even get into the pricey areas where it is just insane. Lots of very reasonable housing still left in Florida - from starters to really nice gated community homes for far less than where I live..and no 3 feet of snow and -30 in January. And property taxes, a fraction of what some people ( like me) pay

Admission to Disneyland, and 10 E tickets cost $1.00. The cost of food there wasn't outrageous either. I can't remember if the Caracvan Inn across the street was $25.00 or $35.00 a night. Which was a lot of money, but was manageable when you split it with other people.
