    S&S is seen as the kind of granddaddy of these lists. No one has ever suggested it's definitive, objective, or anything but what it is: a reflection of what a majority of worldwide critics at the time think. That one may personally disagree with the selections doesn't make it "pointless."

    How many people will have seen all 10 films? How many will go discover something else? Nothing pointless in that. (I'm betting a vast majority of Americans haven't even heard of Tokyo Story, let alone seen it.)

    This decade's list seems to reflect a focus on larger themes (Vertigo for the male gaze) and technical innovation and craft brilliance (Kane, Man with a Movie Camera) than concern with storytelling, character, charm, etc. My top 10 would probably have Casablanca in it and would be skewed towards writing - Chinatown would definitely be there as well.
