It's supposed to be an architectural feature of the auditorium where the Inventor of the Year award takes place. When the film is running, you see 4 or 5 similar concrete arches to the one that surrounds the screen, but they have walls and ceilings connecting them. When the film is running (at least in the part where the audience is full sized), it's a pretty neat effect and works well to make it look more realistic. When the 'curtain' is down and during the shrunken part, it is less effective. Looking at the screen, even ignoring the missing corner, it's not a rectangular screen. The sides slant inward toward the top, and the right side is taller than the left. Theoretically they could still show EO on it, either cropping it to fit the shape of the screen or letterboxing it, but I would be pretty surprised if they did that. It's very easy to put in a temporary movie screen (they do it all the time for premires and special events, like the Pirates premieres on TSI) that uses its own support structure. If they're trying to save money here, which is the logical way to do it, they could just install a 'temporary' screen a couple feet in front of the permanent one. They would have to make some minor adjustments on the projector to make sure it was still in focus at the new distance, but it would be a simple change to make to get the best format of the film shown.

Just speculating here . . .

I guess it might be a way to show that it's back for MJ's death, but it sounds like they're compressing the 17 minute show into 9 minutes or something. But what can we expect from the naming powers behind Toy Story Midway Mania, Silly Symphony Swings, and Carsland? Even when they have a perfectly good name to work with, they still can't manage to get it right.
