I am a fan of EO, and I think I've been very objective about its arrival and potential success or failure (for the record, I think it'll do great business over the summer, and then taper off to more or less HISTA levels after that). It's not fair to say that to be objective you have to NOT like the idea of EO coming back. I think there's been excellent discussion on both sides of the fence. And I think the feedback on yesterday's debut was pretty fair, with the good and the bad. I'm hoping the blurry print is not really the print but just a focal adjustment - it's easy for projector lenses to slide a bit, and easy to correct.

The audiance was lively and really enjoyed the show. The show is very basic compared to Muppets or ITTBAB. They had the wind effect working and the lighting in the back helped the 3D feel. I liked the thumping floor. The print looked ok to me. It was a little faded but that could be because we are so use to bright colors in movies. Its a good show the year.

In the wide shot he's turning one way, but in the cut to the tight shot he's rotating the OPPOSITE direction! Just one of many "fun" moments in the show!

Doesn't sound like they went wild with the motion base (although it's probably not capable of wild movements). If they had gone digital projection, they could have reedited the film and added the 4D effects to the movie itself - ie, starfield and lasers. But probably quite a bit more expense. Also, I have memories that the film was never really crystal clear in the first place, even with 70mm.

Truly -- the 'Captain EO' print always had a bit of that double image and fuzzy edges -- of course the 3-D technology was not as good 20+ years ago as it is today.

Originally Posted By danyoung >How much would reprogramming the inhouse effects cost?< From what I've read, they DID reprogram the in-house effects, like the motion table and the wind effects. I'm betting the equipment to make the fog and the lasers and the starfield are long gone, and would be cost-prohibitive for a short run like this.

Fog machines and lasers aren't hard to come by either - ever been to a mexican disco? As I recall, The original run had a blinking beacon at the back of the theater. And I was corrected on this before, but I seem to remember a sequence of five bright white lights above the screen - not lasers but more like showspots - that fired off in sequence to accent the rat-tat-tat-tat-tat of "Better Part of Me". It would have likely taken the recent installation longer to install every original bell and whistle, and somebody along the way just decided to skip it. But - except for the fiber optic star field - the rest of it was cheap and easy to come by. And they could have if they wanted to, but instead decided to just get by with the basics.
