But by the time McKinley came about, they had already turned into the party of the rich. Theodore Rooosevelt became disgusted with them, and tried to run as a third party candidate. He is arguably the single most popular President we have ever had in office. In fact, it was thought McKinley won beacause he had Roosevelt as his running mate. But even he could not win as a third party candidate. The Democrats really need to shape up. If they do, they could sweep into power again, and stay there for decades.
