I suppose that the reaction in the short term would be rational to the mental health of the person(s) involved.

My incidents didn't stop me from flying. I fly more now than ever. Was I a bit 'jumpy' after them? Yeah.

<<After 3 what I would call fairly concerning incidents I still fly - but I have to admit the time I did not after I lost a friend on a flight - I did not view as irrational...nor did I view as irrational not flying on a DC-10 after numerous incidents in a very short period of time.>>

Losing a friend is something profound, so again I don't view you as being irrational.

People who are just afraid of flying or think it isn't safe are just not living in reality.

<<now about the control thing -- I do have to have ( or at least strongly prefer) a window seat...now why I've never known..naybe it makes me feel more in control even though I'm not>>

I have a similar issue. I MUST be in a window and it's definitely a CONTROL issue ... as in BLADDER CONTROL as in I tend to get up a lot on a flight, and even in First Class, you don't want to have to push over someone 3-4 times on a three hour flight!

btw..there are plenty of people who never drive again after an accident - especailly a serious one..so it's not just flying.

    Premature postage above.

I'm sure that's true. And of a lot of other things too.

I was a nervous wreck after I had the accident, although I drove the next day and had nightmares every night for weeks.

I'm more cautious on the road now. I'm less tolerant of unsafe behavior and have been known to call the FHP when I see someone driving irratically. But I got back on the horse. Life is way too short to live it afraid.

Amen to that. After being on the picadilly line in London thirty minutes before it got bomed and having our dorm cordoned off for the next three weeks as the site of the Tavistock Square bus bombing, I had a real issue with public transport for the next six months.

Fortunately, I've worked through it and am back to riding Metra in Chicago. Sometimes terrible things happen nearby, but I just try to remind myself they are few and far between because I am NOT giving up traveling!
