The Palin documentary received significant promotion before its release on many right-wing blogs and websites. The hype evidently also included an article from Fox News which "reported" on "packed theatres." The problem, as Think Progress notes, is that the article appeared before the film was even showing in theatres. In addition, financial figures released from the film's distributor and at least one individual report confirm that theaters were not "packed" as claimed in the Fox News article. The film was shown in very conservative friendly areas like Orange County, California and Grapevine, Texas. The idea was clearly to generate some free publicity with the crowded theatres in these areas before potentially expanding screenings to other parts of the country. However, the film seems to have not done well even in what would be considered "Palin friendly" territory. The Undefeated took in about $65,000 to $75,000 or about $8,000 per theatre. In comparison, the Harry Potter movie Deathly Hallows took in $168 million and $38,000 per theatre. Of course, it is probably unfair to compare a biography to a big Hollywood production like Deathly Hallows, but Palin's numbers are someone disappointing even for her genre. As Anthony Kaufman of Real Politik writes, a biopic about Joan Rivers opened in seven screens last year and made over $23,000 per theatre.
