They have a rather singular purpose, to build one objet, a pirate ship or a space ship, etc. As a kid, there were no such sets and no instructions. You had to use your imagination, and I think these sets take quite a bit of the creativity out of the hands of the kids. I may be wrong, because I've bought a lot of these sets for my grandson and he does come up with many things on his own. Another thing about Legos, they sure hurt when you step on one.
