My husband has faced a battle with depression since he was about 25. It went undiagnosed until he was 33 but even once he was diagnosed it took a long time to find the right combination of medications and therapists. The stigma of being labeled with a mental illness kept him from seeking treatment for so long. If more people would realize that mental illness is not a weakness and is a real medical condition that needs treatment then maybe fewer people would suffer needlessly. Thank you for sharing what is an intensely personal situation to help bring the illness of depression into specific relief.

From the outside looking in, I can only hope that her parents also receive counseling to understand her problem and their place in it. Through counseling we were able to discover that my illness (Borderline Personality disorder combined with mild OCD) is most likely genetic, as my oldest brother showed similar traits in his youth and eventually became a drug addict who committed suicide. We now know that when I have children, we have to keep a close on them for the same symptoms. I HATED the hospital, it was emotionally draining, but I still use the tools I learned there and will work hard to avoid going back :)

dsnykid first of all I hope you keep fighting the good fight. But that's what I've been saying is that if people want to truly help Britney they should, but she needs to realize that they're helping her and she needs to work at it too. And of course she's not going to just snap out of it, but if she wants to get better she has to be an active part of it too.

So Jim anytime you want to apologize for misconstruing what I said feel free.

In that light, it's hard to feel sorry for her. I think part of the two-week hold is to get whatever drugs she's on out of her system. Only then - when she's sober - can they begin to diagnose what's going on with her mental health.

And in fairness, she's brought a lot of this on herself. She didn't have to live in LA - papparazzi capitol of the world. And she's been in the habit of 'showing off' to the mob when she's out. Not just the panties thing, but shoplifting and generally hamming it up for the cameras.

Most every responsible person in her life has quit or been pushed out. She wasn't totally surrounded by enablers, but this chick is an island - she's going to do whatever she wants regardless of right and wrong.

So yeah - this long slow train wreck has been a media spectacle, played out in front of anyone who's halfway paying attention. And now she's (finally) in the hands of professionals. She'll either get better, or she won't. I'm not optimistic.

But if she does get her sanity back, and her kids, and her life, she can still be a "star" - all it takes is a good record.

I don't think she brought it on herself except for the decision to have two kids inside of a year. It seems she was ripe for some sort of psychotic break and that extra stress sure didn't help. I don't think people ask for mental illness any more than they ask for a car crash or a broken bone. It's not uncommon for people with mental illnesses to push helpful people away.

According to the media (and how knows how trustworthy it is) she did not have any drugs in her system during her last hold. It is possible that she's not taking anything.

I think she's really very sick and needs help.

In my opinion, it is simply jealousy and envy!
People in general seem to be able to feel sorry for people who have less than them but as soon as it is someone who seemingly has everything, then it is all their fault.
I don't think that it matters whether she is mentally ill or not, she is obviously in a very sad state and we should all feel compassion for any human being in this situation!
It is a sad commentary on our society when people revel in the despair of others!

    Why should he?

You're the one with the heartless attitude.

It's nothing new...and then you wonder why it upsets people.

Why don't you go make fun of the poor or something?

She's obviously going through some serious problems, but because she's young and in the public eye everyone assumes it's just another case of an overindulged celebrity.

I do think she'll clean up and be on all of the big talk shows like Oprah, etc. I hope she makes it...it would be really awesome to see her, healthy and strong.

For those of us with mentally ill friends and loved ones, it would be really great to see her succeed.

But I guess there is something to the idea that with all of her money, she's got a lot more inspiration to get healthy than someone who can't hold down a job and has pushed their family so far away that they're alone in the world.

Because I never said that she should snap out of it. I said she has to work at getting better.

But again Jim lied about what I said. Just like you did in our thread about the poor.

But I guess that's to be expected from you.

    Neither did Jim.

You need to get over yourself, and start being a better person.

It's nasty to read your attitude, all about looking down your nose at people.

    Here, and elsewhere.

Seriously, dude...makes me want to puke reading your horrible comments.

How is that looking down at people? Within this topic I said that Britney needs to work at getting better too, people can help but she has to want the help. Again how is that looking down at people?
