That doesn't really mean much. There wasn't much to build on from the first film. Few film sequels actually improve on the originals.

Actually it was just announced last week there are THREE more films coming(Yeah, I know - who wants 'em!?)and they will start release from 2016.

We all know about Disney's reticence to build attractions based on films that flopped(Treasure Planet and Atlantis), if the Avatar films start trending down, which could very well happen based on the massive backlash as evidenced online, Disney could end up with a MASSIVE purple fluro turkey on their hands.

If it actually ends up being built.

"Pocahontas Smurf" was the best description I saw. It looked great, but the script was awful. I just don't get the love for that film (or for Cameron in general, who just can't admit that he's a fine director of spectacle but he can't write his way out of the proverbial paper bag.)

Still, I have no doubt that at least the first sequel will do great business. The first sequel to something THAT successful seems critic-proof - witness the 2nd Pirates movie, The Hangover 2, and countless others that the critics hated but the public flocked to anyway. And if it isn't seen as a massive come-down in quality (which I doubt, since I'm sure it will look great, and that's all the first one had going for it), then the third will probably do well too.

I wouldn't really call it 'backlash', but more general indifference. People were generally excited to see the film when it was in theaters, and everybody was talking about it. A month or two after the hype was gone, people had practically forgotten about it. To me, it's a huge risk to build an expansion like this on a film franchise that has such a lukewarm reception. I don't think that there are a ton of people out there who are anti-Avatar, but there isn't much buzz building for the upcoming sqeuels (especially when compared to the upcoming sequels for the tried-and-true Star Wars franchise)

Leave well enough alone. I really think he got lucky with Avatar's success.

-James Cameron is the man who created the blueprints for making a successful sequel. He created T2 and ALIENS. He is one of the few people alive who knows what needs to be done in order to improve upon the original.

-Like Marvel movies and Star Wars, there will be a new Avatar film in theaters every year starting in 2016.

-Disney is VERY excited and honored to be working with Cameron and the big Avatar land will be open in Walt Disney World in 2017 between Avatar 2 and 3. Plans are already being made for Avatar lands and attractions at other parks including Disneyland in California. The general public is for the most part very excited. Outside of Star Wars and Marvel, this will probably be Disney's biggest draw since they don't have access to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and gave up on Narnia, Oz, and Wonderland.

The general public thank you for speaking for them but ask you to refrain from such in the future.

The masses of people who like the first one? It did do pretty well.

"Disney could end up with a MASSIVE purple fluro turkey on their hands."

Depends on the execution of the land itself.

"It looked great, but the script was awful."

Which is why a land, done right, could be awesome.

"To me, it's a huge risk to build an expansion like this on a film franchise that has such a lukewarm reception."

Massive box office, positive reviews and a boatload of Oscar nominations (including Best Picture). Lukewarm.

Only if you believe that Hollywood history started in the 80s. But yeah, those two films were very good examples of sequels going well. As I said, I have no doubt that at least the first avatar sequel will do well, whether it's any good or not. And there's a good chance it'll be okay in its vein.

"Which is why a land, done right, could be awesome."

Oh sure, a theme park land is a whole different animal. The movie doesn't necessarily have to be that good – carsland being the prime example right now.

Oh, wait. DON'T look at Star Wars! DON'T look at Star Wars!

But seriously ... I'm trying to picture an Avatar land, and all I keep coming up with is Pandoran Family Robinson's Treehouse. Guess it's a good thing I didn't grow up wanting to be an Imagineer, huh.
