Sure enough, after I got off of work yesterday, I went to Barnes and Noble, picked up a copy and used a store credit I had to pay for half of it. Since I was at a party last night, I got around to reading the first chapter late that night, and then a few more this afternoon.

A coworker of mine was re-reading the first 6 books to refresh her memory. Eh, that's just too much Harry Potter all at once for me. :)

Then again when I was at my friend's party last night, this one guy had said that he and a few of his buddies saw all three extended versions of LOTR in the theatres. That's 12 hours of movies all at once...geez.

I skipped out on the midnight party, but go to my Borders at 9:00 AM Saturday and only had to wait behind one other person for a cashier to become available. From front door to front door it took about 30 minutes.

We were home by 12:05 (I live right around the corner) and was reading by 12:10.

I've heard rumors of some Borders stores running out, but it looks like most stores have more than enough this time.

Part of the reason customers wanted to "reserve" copies is that some of the previous books really did sell out. Many bookstores had to turn away customers who wanted "Order of the Phoenix" and "Half-Blood Prince" a few days after their initial releases.

I found these numbers for the initial U.S. printings:
    Sorceror's Stone - 50,000
    Chamber of Secrets - 250,000
    Prisoner of Azkaban - 500,000
    Goblet of Fire - 3,800,000
Order of the Phoenix - 6,800,000
    Half-Blood Prince - 10,800,000
    Deathly Hallows - 12,000,000
