It's the same reaction many people have to 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' in 'The Wizard of Oz.' The way Judy Garland handles both of those songs, it's hard not to be moved.

And sometimes, depending on where you are in your life, it can seem depressing.

I had no idea! They are so screechy it seems impossible that it's (intact) men singing the "ooh oohs" in that song, but if you say so. Either way I can NOT stand it.

    >>>It's really about a woman doing a dance that she thinks she needs to do in order to not be thought of as a bad girl. Women don't do this as much now as they did back then but most of us still do it.<<<
That was always my interpretation of the song, it never seemed the least bit "rapey" to me. It's a song I really like. Especially when the duet is done well, like in 'Elf' or 'For the Boys'.

I read a lot about this or that song not being a Christmas song, as far as I'm concerned if it's associated with Christmas it's a Christmas song, even if the lyrics are more about Winter than Jesus. Christmas is celebrated in its current form as a rejoicing that the days will be getting longer again, the Winter Solstice as well as a religious holiday.
A Carol is a completely different matter all together, in that I prefer the classics.

BTW, one of the best Christmas albums I ever heard was Will Vinton's Claymation Christmas Celebration. It has a really fun Doo Wop version of We Three Kings. :)

I absolutely love it, and yes, it's definitely got a sombre tone, but I think that's what appeals to me in a weird way.

Funnily enough here, since Christmas is celebrated in summer, a lot of people don't like the playing of wintery Christmas songs. I personally love them, and really couldn't care that it doesn't happen to be a winter wonderland outside :)

I also LOVE "Santa Baby" in "Elf" just bought the "Elf" soundtrack and glad I did :)

Well here we DO have the long nights and short days, but it's hardly a Winter Wonderland. The closest to snow we get is frost on the cars and grass after a cold night. And the mountains above town get some, which is always pretty. But I always liked the Winter songs too, I am always dreaming of a 'White Christmas' and never get one :). Then again, we complain about the bitter cold if it dips below 50 during the day and 40 at night.

The only problem I have is when a song was clearly not intended as a Christmas song, and suddenly gets "converted." WHether one is celebrating the secular or religious holiday, "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" and "My Favorite Things" really have nothing to do with Christmas.

And get those kids off my lawn!

    >> I am always dreaming of a 'White Christmas' and never get one :).<<
You know, of course, that "White Christmas" was written in Los Angeles. There's even a verse about how sunny it is in "Beverly Hills, LA."

    >>I have never seen "Meet me in St Louis"...<<
See it. It's a wonderful film. And not about Christmas! It just has a very memorable Christmas sequence. The Halloween sequence is far more memorable-- it just doesn't have a great song to go with it.

It's a wonderful movie...the Halloween scene is pretty bizarre.

UGH, "My Favorite Things" as Christmas music is a "change the station NOW" moment in my world.

That's true. The halloween scence in is quite odd, but entertaining. The youngest daughter in that movie is something! I know it's not a Christmas movie, but I tend to watch it at Christmas time.
