I think you're both right. Kumbaya, my Lord....

I know plenty of people with PhDs or Masters, and outside of a university environment, they're normal, well-adjusted people who just tend to be much brighter, more curious, with better critical thinking skills.

In a university environment, however.... Have you ever spent a lot of time with people whose lives are spent on a college campus, day in and day out? I don't mean the professors who also do work outside of the classroom in research and writing and have families and travel. I mean the people that never leave. The undergrad who becomes the graduate who becomes the TA who becomes the associate professor who gets tenure and becomes the full blown professor, who has no spouse and no friends or life outside of the campus. I'm generalizing, but they're out there, and they cannot live and work and play in the real world.

Well that's just it. They have a very narrow and very specific ideology for how America is supposed to work, but they label those things broadly - like "fiscal responsibility" or "small government."

In truth, most of these people want no such thing. As SPP so succinctly pointed out in another thread, how is this movement across the nation in various state governments to severely restrict abortion "small government?" How is defense spending "fiscal responsibility?"

Republicans were always better at clear, explicit, even manipulative language. "The Patriot Act." "Repeal the Job Killing Healthcare Act." They have no qualms about calling things something that is literally the opposite of what it is.

Yup. Eisenhower warned us about the industrial military complex. And he was correct to do so.

    1. Gin up the fear for the big bad Muslim boogeyman in order to justify billions upon billions for failed wars in the middle east.

    2. Scream at the top of your lungs about the imminent collapse of the government because of the ballooning deficit.

    3. Start demanding cuts to the social programs taking 1/1000th of the dollars spent by the DoD in the middle east in a fake attempt to reduce the deficit.

    4. Increase the DoD's budget.

    Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

The GOP "Riches to Riches" Four Step Program.

I always enjoyed the "Clear Skies Act" of 2005, which sought to weaken existing regulations for what energy producers could pump into the atmosphere. And once again, rank and file republicans were lining up to endorse pollution. Maybe they're planning on not breathing when they get rich.

    >> I'll believe Republicans are really serious about getting our fiscal house in order when they start talking about what a total waste Iraq and Afghanistan were/are. <<

The reason that will never happen is because republicans are directly culpable for the "total waste" of Iraq and Afghanistan. And they know it. So they'll be no acknowledgement of the costs involved. If they had their way, both wars would still be "off the books" - less accountability that way.

There's another little trick that they play. With Egypt, we've been sending $1.3 billion to $2 billion in "aid" every year since 1979. What happens with these US taxpayer dollars is the Egyptians skim off their "take" and then turn around and use the remainder to buy weapons and defense systems from US contractors.

See how this works? The money is funneled through egypt, much of it is skimmed, and then it's appropriated to well connected defense contractors - which was the original intent all along. Essentially it's our government "laundering" the money through Egypt before it arrives at it's intended destination - the defense industry. This is called "foreign aid", not to be confused with the defense budget. And it's been working like a charm for over thirty years now.

    Just a few.

After all, as you say she's "one of the smartest people", right?

So, just what solutions are being proposed by her?

I'll give you a thousand thanks if you'll be so kind as to educate us all on these solutions you speak of (either your own, or the people you support, either one is fine).

Maybe Mr X you need to read the community guidelines again, and try to be more civil to others.

Or those of your right wing heros?

ANY answer about a solution to ANY issue would be fine.

    Just one.
