We can tell that it was a corporate decision to put Avatar in the parks, not one that creatively or thematically makes much sense. It just doesn't feel 'right'. Maybe if WDI (the people ultimately responsible for how their product turns out) had more say in what was built, we'd get a better end product. As it is, it just seems like a very corporate move.

Normally you're the company booster whenever the conversation turns a little bit anti-WDC. Whoda thought you could actually make sense like the rest of us?!? ; )

The creatures of Avatar are two years old and were created for a movie. That's one difference. I'm not even sure you should call Avatar's creatures "mythical". Fictitious, yes. But I think of mythical as something that has its origins in a distant, earlier time.

You could see the design philosophy went something like, "Well, a normal tiger has four legs so lets draw a six legged one......and make it purple.......and day glo." In fact, EVERYTHING on "Pandora" was designed EXACTLY like THAT. Different shades of purple and blue. Now picture a giant shed painted day glo/dark light(whatever)purple and blue. With digitally projected floating mountains on the back wall. And lots of Enya music. And bored Orlando teens hopping around in giant blue cat smurf suits wearing those springy leg things. Exciting, aint it?

I could poke holes in many things including my beloved Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. But if done right this could be very cool.

Even if they DO do an EE type effort, who's to say within two years the giant purple AA dragon thing at the end of the attraction doesn't malfunction and they put it into "Disco Giant Purple Dragon Thing" mode? It aint like it isn't precedented.

"I think the key, Dave, is the term, "if done right"." Disney has already hired one of Hollywood's top film directors, and they've locked in the single biggest money making film of all time. They certainly are planning to throw a lot of money at this project, and Cameron doesn't exactly have a reputation for doing things half way. Finally, there's that WWoHP thingy up the street that has raised expectations and will likely drive Disney to outdo itself. Really they have no other choice. So, in short, they'd have to work hard to F this up. On a side note, as the construction details emerge from Cars Land and Buena Vista Street, it isn't a stretch to anticipate something equally well done for whatever Disney conjures up for Avatar-land.
