I disagree with you. Considering most people do *not* live near a Disney park, I'd wager that many more people are fans of the films than the parks themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Treasures tanked this year. We geeks have been drooling over the possibility of the True Life Adventures, and we get them. And then a few weeks later they release the most timid lineup of Treasures since it began.

And I have to think that the overly-bulky packaging of these things works against it. If you know your audience is small and rabid, why spend so much on the outsides? Disney Records is doing the smart thing - they know no one buys the rare CDs, so they put it on itunes. Use the media.

And about the "lack of outrage" on the Disney sites, basil fan is right. These sites all seem to focus on the parks. Sometimes theatrical releases or DVD's don't even get discussed at all.

And except for the rest of Donald's stuff, there's nothing else I'm clamoring for (and that's really my OCD completism talking) as far as Treasures. At least nothing that can't be put out easier than the Treasures (like more MMC).

By most definitions of "tanked," it's guaranteed, with the editions limited to 65,000 copies.

Which is kind of the point. According to the "well-placed source", (and I know who it is, and he knows of what he speaks), the inferior mastering, lousy promotion, and small edition sizes of the more recent Treasures were literally a conspiracy by some the home video department to prove to their superiors that the Treasures were a waste of resources. Politics, pure and simple.

And that's why some of us can't get very excited about the Legacy series, which so far is limited, poorly promoted, packaged more cheaply, and has the most incompetent mastering in the history of major studio DVDs.

Nope. Nowhere near any of the parks. I get to WDW maybe once every 3 years. I'd go once a year if I lived closer.

Okay. I base my statement on many sources:

People I meet. Those who know the parks but not the films far outnumber those who know the films but not the parks. However, I'm only talking about folks who call themselves Disney fans, not the unwashed masses.

Discussion boards. Check out the Trivia section and count the park-related topics vs. the film-related topics. I was visiting a new board that was trying to get off the ground. They billed themselves as a general Disney site, but they didn't even have one single section dedicated to films. You had to post under "Disney: Other." Parks had dozens of sections to post in.

Websites. I usually check out any one I hear of with Disney in the title. The majority deal with parks.

Books. There always seems to be a new book about the parks pending.

The late lamented Disney Magazine. What was the ratio of parks to movies there? Check your back issues.

However, I did say this was only my opinion. I may not be meeting a true cross-section. I may be looking in all the wrong places on the web. (But I'm not wrong about Disney Magazine--that was fact, not opinion).

Whether I'm right or wrong, it's no insult to be either parks-oriented or film-oriented. It's your choice.

Or you could just be a Disney omnivore!

As far as online sources, well yeah, naturally web sites such as this one are going go have much more "park appeal" since that's their basis. Frankly, when I joined LP, I was sadly disappointed at the smaller amount of discussion on the "films" boards. I couldn't understand it, because in my sheltered only-been-to-WDW-thrice life at that time, I assumed every Disney fan of course loved the movies. And every Disney fan who loved the parks would love the movies because, hello, so many things in the parks are based on the movies. I was so surprised when I learned that wasn't the case (and still find the concept boggling that there are park-fans-who-aren't-big-on-the-films folks out there).

And the fact that the "Disney Music" board is all but dead---wow, how sad.

As for Disney Magazine, I always lamented over how it was so park-oriented (i.e., "boring" to someone like me who hardly ever goes) and not a *true* "Disney" magazine IMO---a look at the classic films, characters, television shows, merchandise, and a *bit* of park info. So when it tanked, I wasn't surprised, telling myself I'd much rather have a more balanced Disney magazine about Disneyana anyway. lol ;-)

I guess we just come from different places. lol

Well, the Disney Magazine use to be a members only mag for Magic Kingdom Club members. It use to be called Disney News and was around for a long time. True, it focused on the parks, but that's who it was aimed towards. They pretty much kept to that was they went public. One of the mistakes in Disney Mag going public, is that they never explained themselves, so the mainstream public didn't quite understand it. I loved the Disney News / Disney Magazine. I didn't love that fact they started putting ads in when they went public. It sorta lost it uniqueness.

To the casual fan, The Hardy Boys set may seem pointless, but we've been watching them as a family completely absorbed. The Pluto vol 2 set also contained some Figaro the cat shorts that I have never seen, and I was thrilled to finally have a copy of those. The Your Host Walt Disney set has the kinescope of the 1959 special that opened all those great attractions that year, and it is so cool to watch! There are a few more important specials from Disneyland featuring Walt that should definately be released as Treasures. Silly Symphonies vol 2 completes the series of shorts, and there are some real gems on this set. There were so many Donalds produced that it would take probably 2 more sets to complete that series of shorts, and this is probably the most frustrating news to animation fans. I would also like to have the rest of the Elfego Baca and Swamp Fox sets, and at least another set of Rarities and education shorts. Leonard Maltin and the producers have my heartfelt thanks for their efforts and I wish that they would just continue on with their good work. I'm not sure what the plans are for the newly launched Legacy series beyond the first 7 that have been announced. The True Life films are very entertaining, and we're looking forward to the Oswald, Destino, and Disneyland sets, but it's hard to guess if there will be any more after that and what they might be.

Same here. We watched the whole series on Christmas night, when I was just hoping to get a couple episodes in. The rest of the family wanted to keep it going (many remembered when it was originally on), partially because of the memories, partially because of how cheesy it is, but also a genuine desire to know what happens next. Are they going to be able to be shown in the theaters and rake in record numbers? No way, but that does not mean that they aren't really fun to watch, especially in a group.

First things first today: I've got GREAT news for you Disney fans. I've just confirmed this morning with Buena Vista Home Entertainment that their much loved Walt Disney Treasures line of DVDs has NOT been cancelled. In fact, I'm told that at least a couple more waves of releases in the line are planned, with the next due in time for the holidays this year. We'll post additional details as they become available, but rest assured this news comes straight from the studio and it's the real deal. So there you go, folks!

Fantastic. I'll be making the appropriate shelf space available for more wonderful tins.
