In theory expansion should pay for itself via increased revenue generation (more turnstile clicks, etc.)

Of course its not "necessary". But every publicly traded business has a fiduciary responsibility to its shareholders to:

    1) Maximize profit
    2) Keep the business healthy in the long term.

So they will try to find the right balance in supply and demand. They will raise prices as much as possible. If they alienate customers who decide to go elsewhere, then they went too far.

But keep in mind that there are 20,000,000 people in SoCal. They do not need each and every one of those people to visit. They are content with attracting a subset of that demographic, one that will spend money freely and probably visit multiple days per year. Its a demographic that probably won't even blink at a $5 parkhopper price increase. I too missed the the old price (we are going next month), but in the big picture it was nothing, and since I got us great deals on airfare, rental car and hotel, this trip will cost a few hundred less than last time.

I agree. I just ordered 5 day hoppers, which we will upgrade to Deluxe AP's next month, and will return within the 12 month window. We might even come in August, as the only blockout days appear to be Saturdays, which we avoid like the plague anyway.

I have noticed that on a daily cost basis that a tourist trap vacation, where one visits a town's kitchy attractions can cost just as much, if not more than a DLR vacation. You end up spending the same (if not more) on airfares and hotels, so at the end of the day that 5 day hopper is a real bargain.

I have only visited WDW once in 2000 and I really didn't like it. As you said I didn't feel that cozy, magical feeling there. It seemed much more money orientated and not focused on the detail.

Oh and could I hire you to write all my college papers?? Haha.

    Legoland $57.00
    Sea World $57.00

    ------------

I'm catching up here since I missed this thread the weekend it started.

This may be true..but for $65 at Sea World, I can go all year with only 2 blackout days. For $85, I can go with NO blockouts, free PREFERRED parking, and 15% discount on food and merch.

For $169 (??) I can get my SoCal AP, not be able to go on any Saturday, only get 10% off food, and have to pay an additional $60 for parking. I can't even park free to spend a day at DtD! I can only park on days my AP is valid, when a DAP can pay the same amount for parking addition and park more days than me.

I can agree with the price increases. BUT, offer child APs. I can't see paying almost $200 each for 4 SoCal APs and an additional fee for parking. They don't need the 10% food discount or free parking..they just need admission. And yes, while the more we go, the less we spend per admission day, it's just getting out of hand.

I think Premium Annual Passes should be the only passes offered. The park is crowded all the time now even during the off season. During the off season the bulk of the crowd are locals and you can bet that a huge percentage of them are AP's--most of them of the cheaper AP variety. What good are huge crowds that consist of people not buying food and souvenirs? Those that pay high prices and buy lots of souvenirs have to suffer through crowds of people who are hanging around almost for free.

The Disneyland Resort is a premium experience and should be priced accordingly.

Also, regarding Disneyland annual passes, I would suggest buying 1 Premium pass and the rest as SoCal passes. That way you get the discounts and free parking for your family without having to buy Premo passes for everyone.

I was comparing in regards to the availability of Southern California promotions. Like Shiva said, if Disneyland raises their PAPs to $500, some people will scoff and visit somewhere else. And I was also saying that other parks are NOT raising their prices to the extent that Disneyland is. I am happy to pay for my AP, but any higher, and I may have to reduce myself to a few trips a year and/or just buying myself an AP, as my youngest daughter just turned 3. Which was another one of my points. If I buy her a SoCal pass, she can't visit every day I can, but why should I pay almost $400 for a PAP for her when (1) she's always there with me and doesn't need parking or food discounts and (2) it's just ridiculous.

They should offer kids prices on APs. Maybe 1/2 - 2/3 the price.

Who would still like to know why DCA is priced the same as DL.
