I have recently been laid off after 32 years and if I worked in So. Cal I would apply at DL, too.

Overall I think corporate America does have a love/hate relationship with their employees. And I agree that if your immediate manager is good it will make a big difference in your experience.

I learned at work this weekend that Casting has cut way back on their spring hiring plan. The turnover rate has dropped even below the projections from last October, and they are planning on hiring even fewer this spring, and since the waiting lists are still long they don't plan on padding the lists much more than they already are.

Good luck to anyone applying for Disneyland this spring for summertime work.

What? You mean people aren't leaving? It doesn't suck so much to work there they'd rather not work at all? I'm shocked, shocked, I tell you.

Thanks again for this update. It is truly valuable insight to not only what is happening at Disneyland but also what is going on with the labor market in general within Orange County.

There's a break room in a trailer behind Innoventions. It was installed there about six years ago, as they were getting ready to demo the CircleVision interior and install Buzz. It's not pretty, but it's one of the better ones because it doesn't smell, it has working AC, working bathrooms attached to the breakroom, and a small covered patio with tables and chairs. The vending machines there are also kept stocked regularly and have a broad selection. The furniture is the standard hard steel chairs and plastic tables, but there is enough of it so that no one sits on the floor or stairs for lack of seating on busier days. It also has big windows that open, which helps air flow and seems to prevent the usual smells at other small, enclosed break rooms from developing.

The best break rooms are, of course, at TDA. They have several on every floor, they have nice furniture, they are kept spotless and fully stocked with coffee and hot cocoa and tea bags and hot water, with a GE refrigerator that is cleaned weekly, a big sink and microwaves cleaned regularly, TV's on the wall that get cable, and wall art featuring the latest Disney release that is changed seasonally. They are perfectly climate controlled and nicely lighted, with vending machines that are always full of product. It's really a very plush setup there in TDA.

The bummer is not just the physical appearance, daily cleaning service and more lavish furnishings, it's the coffee and drink service. Park break areas are lucky to have running water, as many don't. But TDA break areas have the full kitchen setup with the beverage service; decaf and regular coffee brewed routinely, filtered hot water with a big selection of tea, creamer, sugar, splenda, stir sticks, napkins, hot cocoa packets, all restocked and tidied up daily. It's like the Taj Mahal of break rooms and complimentary beverages back in TDA. None of that exists in the park break areas, anywhere.

It would be nice to have a cup of coffee waiting for you if you had an opening shift, instead of going to Starbucks or McD's and paying for it on your way in. Little simple things really, and I don't mean to be a whiner, but it would make a big difference if the Park Cast was treated the same as the TDA Cast.

Yeah man, Disneyland is a great job compared to, you know, homelessness. Here the "Disney Difference" is a paltry pittance in a pitiful economy.

Suddenly it's like the turnover problems never happened!

THis is pretty standard fare in Corporate America. That only "professional" staff in TDA get this and not CMs says a great deal about how management feels about the hourly paid staff.

Remember, that grass is always greener on the other side.

If employees don't like bagging groceries, or changing oil in our cars, work hard at getting a degree - and then, if you don't like that "cushy" office job, you could always go back to a job that lets you say "paper or plastic".
Getting a degree gives you more opportunity...

That's absolutely true. But at the same time, should people just lay down and not speak out for improvements at their workplace?

After all, this is the company that touts the Disney Difference. Is part of the Disney Difference this "Don't complain or get out" mentality?

It would seem to me that having break areas that all meet at least a certain minimum standard (AC/heat, enough seating, operable and stocked vending machines, water, and no odor) is not too much to ask, would not actually cost a lot of money in the big scheme of things, and would more than pay for itself in terms of CM morale. Not working there and not knowing the specifics, it does seem that from my point of view that this reflects poorly on the attitude of management.

No wonder Disneyland doesn't have problems filling roles right now.
