They're also a particularly good place for playing games. My favorite is the Action Auction. It's based on a game we play at camp (you get like 5 minutes to go back to your cabin a fill a trash bag with random stuff, and then do the same as follows...) that just uses totally random things. You decided on a meeting spot, and then pick a category (ex. something green) or an item that you know they won't have (ex. a steak), and then everybody gets a certain ammount of time (2 or 3 min for dollar stores is usually plenty, but at least 5 min for places like WalMart) to run around and find the best thing they can. I really prefer the dollar stores, because they have some really random things, all close by, so you don't end up running back and forth across the store. This works really well when you start getting creative with the categories, and how to apply them to the items. My favorite categories in a dollar store are best deal and most overpriced, since everything has the same price. It's a blast, and would probably be a fun rainy day activity at home with kids (we use it when it rains at camp). Not sure if that means I like the dollar store or not though...

I agree that the dollar store is a great place to pick up wrapping paper, Disney kids' items, stationery supplies, kitchen items, candles, and, yeah, stuff you don't know where else to go for when your shopping list includes, oh, say: St. Patrick's Day card, marshmallows, foreign-language dance CD, cell phone case, Princess stickers, bubble-wrap envelopes, and handcuffs. As re: food... I tend to stick with things that aren't subject to getting stale, molding, or harboring bugs. (No, I will NOT be buying pancake mix there again, thankyouverymuch.)

I have never had much luck with utensils; they always break after a use or two. I think they are wonderful for folks on a strict budget and hope they do not disappear.

A lot of the time, this causes higher prices than you would find most places, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of the dollar store in the first place. And don't get me started on the Five and Dime in Toontown... : )
