They have a real engineering issue and I really don't see a fix, other than lifetime tops for us. Not only that, it's a 2003 Turbo, and it only has 22K miles on it. Our warranty runs to 100K, but with each replacement we get one year or 12K miles regardless of warranty now that it's been done once...well twice.

But if the probability of an average repair bill of $500 is only 20%, then you are overpaying $200 dollas for the warranty, which is why they are such gravy trains for the stores that sell them. Of course, the payback for any insurance is poor (insurers need to make a profit after all). Which is why I only buy insurance to cover catastrophes. For instance, I have a term life insurance policy that expires this year. I spent about $9000 on that policy over its 15 year span. Since I didn't die (the probability was very low as I was very young when I took out the policy) its money that went down the drain. But I needed the coverage for my family in the unlikely event that I died prematurely. But if the hard drive crashes on my PC it won't be the end of the world (unless I didn't back up my data), I'll merely be out something like $100-200.

But I suppose that if you just have to have a Mexican built VW (assembled with indifference in Puebla), then the extended Warranty might make sense.
