Most patently dumb sentence of the week ... and it's only Monday.

I'm making a judgement on this duck dimwit. He said that the pre-civil rights era was one where black people were perfectly happy and content. I judge that to be a ludicrous, racist statement. While his homophobic comments are getting the most attention, his defenders have been quite hush-hush about the racial parts of it because even most of them know what hogwash it is.

Think about it. Here's a very wealthy, supposedly educated 'reality' tv star in 2013 talking about how good African Americans had it back in the good ol' days.

    Indefensible.

Apparently, the creator of Duck Dynasty, Scott Gurney, was in an indie gay porn flick. I wonder if Phil knew about that before accepting such a lucrative fake, uh, reality show gig?

Also, there are six pre-show photos showing how these guys and their wives looked before the show was created. Ken and Barbie aren't as white as these yuppies.

This is nothing short of a scam. Period. And after reading this article, I'm thoroughly convinced that this was all done deliberately to put the show in the spotlight and goose their ratings.

I weep for the loss of American IQ points.

Yep. And even if you assume that his statements were sincere there is absolutely no way that A&E wasn't unaware of his views since this wasn't the first time ignorant remarks have come from his mouth.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if A&E planned this and timed this. Most reality shows that were once the hottest thing going fade after a while through sheer repetition and the fact that the subjects just aren't that interesting.

But this is the biggest cash cow A&E has ever had, so it's completely possible that they decided to turn their loyal audience from loyal to ULTRA-loyal by ginning up this controversy, knowing that as soon as they issued this bogus "suspension," idiots like Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindal would be bellyaching about "free speech" and "the 1st amendment" (which, of course, doesn't even apply to private enterprise like A&E) and the redneck followers of the show would turn from fans into uber-fans, because Phil was "under attack," just like they feel straight white Christians in general are "the real persecuted minority these days."

These people are nothing if not loyal and calcified in their loyalties. Palin herself is example A - her 15 minutes should have been up years ago, but she's still trotted out regularly because she still has her idiot constituency.

Sure enough DD merch is flying off the shelves to an even greater degree than before and I guarantee ratings for the next season will be up, when you might have expected a slight downturn at this point in a reality show's lifecycle. The DD guys have gone from "guys I like to watch" to "cultural warriors/heroes" among tea party types. And this probably means the show/cash cow continues a season or two longer than it would have otherwise.

The more gays, blacks, and people-with-a-brain are offended, the more the show's fans will like it. They kinda live for that. And they will absolutely rally and stay rallied around this guy, and probably insist that the photos showing what fakes these faux-rednecks (actually wealthy yuppies) are must have been photoshopped.

"While his homophobic comments are getting the most attention, his defenders have been quite hush-hush about the racial parts of it because even most of them know what hogwash it is."

I think probably half of them know it's hogwash, and the other half believe it too. Seriously - I know people quite well on my Mom's side who think everything was hunky dory pre-civil rights and that both blacks AND whites were better off in those glorious days gone by.

Some just have very selective and often self-congratulatory memories (I'm thinking about the people who compare Phil to Rosa Parks - !! - when back in the day they either did or would have opposed Rosa Parks with everything they had), but others really think things were better then.

Nope. I'm still standing by post 28. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

I feel no moral imperative to be agreeable to bigots. I think they should be shunned, loudly and vocally, at every opportunity. Wish A&E would do the same.

They have the right to speak out. And we as a society should have the right to eliminate them from the public airwaves.

True. You actually have to start calling them names like "sinner" and "bitch", THEN you're on the good and proper judgemental path.

We all know that the folksy attitudes and the ZZ Top beards are all for show, and that they aren't like in real life.

I'm just hoping this stupid show runs its course. If I see another official piece of "Duck Dynasty" merchandise for sale I might toss my cookies.

The perps are a reality show production company called Gurney Productions … and if Civil War II breaks out, I vote that this is the first place the Union should blow up. Observe:

I happened to stumble across a few minutes of "Wild Recon" a few days ago, and realized that yes, the dumb people in this country really ARE getting dumber. It's literally the worst TV show I've ever seen … and I worked TV Master Control for 9 years.
