Coke Zero really is amazing. I would never believe that it was a zero-calorie drink if it didn't say so on the label. The sweetener it uses is so different than the other ones - not only is the taste strong, but it gives the drink a "heavy" quality to it that usually only sugar does.

Diet Coke Plus is genious - Diet Coke plus vitamins and minerals. I will finally have a balanced diet!

And what else can be said about Tab - the all-time classic diet cola. You can sometimes find it in supermarkets. I love to buy it when I see it, and it's surprising how many conversations I've struck up with people when they see it in my cart - they say "Where did you get that?!?! I had no idea they still made it!" A woman I used to work with said she always bought Tab in college, as if she bought Diet Coke and put it in the dorm refrigerator, it would "disappear," but nobody would ever take her Tab.

But regular Diet Coke will always be the classic sweet nectar.

Basically nothing? I would hope that they actually use the money to replace the items that need to be replaced, and not just run an air cleaner for 45 minutes. For a "smoke free" hotel, I think the expectations of guests will be much higher. The Grand Californian has been 100% non-smoking since opening, and it makes a remarkable difference - just like an airplane that was put in service after smoking was banned. If I were staying at a 100% non-smoking property and they charge people replacement costs if they break the rules, my expectation would be that there should not be a hint of cigarette smoke smell in the room.

<<< We were once put into a nonsmoking at WDW even though a smoking room was requested...We were told not to worry about it and to ask housekeeping for ashtrays. >>>

I think you're just reinforcing one of the benefits of the new policy. In a 100% non-smoking property, the above would not happen.

<<< And please someone tell me how smoking on a balcony is going to create a problem >>>

Two reasons: smoke wafts into nearby balconies, and smoke will enter nearby rooms that have the window or door open. Plus, it would not surprise me if in many cases, the door of the room with the smoker on the balcony remains at least partially open so that they can talk to people inside.

I wish there were a solution to the problem that didn't crimp the style of smoking guests, and I don't think policies like this should be done for "nanny state" reasons. But I sure do like going into a smoke-free environment.

... that's where TDR is! But you do have a point. And actually, TDR is remarkably non-smoker friendly considering what country it's in. The hotels all seem to have non-smoking rooms that really are non-smoking, and in the parks all of the dining facilities are non-smoking. With the current rules in Japan, the smoking situation is very much like it is in most US states, with one big exception: many small restaurants may not have a non-smoking section. Going out to a bar is almost guaranteed to be a smoky environment in Japan as it is in most of the US (except for California and a few other places). But I know that going in. I guess it's kind of like Las Vegas. One knows that smoking is allowed in Las Vegas, so that's part of the bargain going in. If one wants to go to LV and is a non-smoker, then that's just part of the deal.

At least in the US, I can be seated in the non-smoking section of a restaurant. Going out to a bar (in most states) means smoke, but I know the deal going into it. Even though once I get back to the hotel from a bar, I'll be noticeably smoky, and probably not be able to re-wear any clothes I was wearing until they're washed (note to self: stay in a hotel with laundry service), that's the extent of it.

But if I get stuck in a hotel room that was smoked in, then *everything* I have takes on the smell: all of my clothes, and even my laptop and camera will smell of smoke for some time once I get back home.

Try cutting it with some Jack Daniels.
I believe the days when smokers were treated fairly or very numbered. Segregated to a small area of the resorts, and parks, I never had one problem with them. When they are eraticated by a non-tolerate society, fat people look out your next.

The entire floor reeked as soon as I stepped off the elevator, as did the room, although presumably neither had been smoked in in some time. I don't think they did much other than a most cursory amount of cleaning.

What's the situation at the WDW hotels? Since there no longer are smoking rooms, do they even keep track of what the old room status was? Is there a way to request a room that's always been non-smoking? In practice, is it ever a problem?
