The scary thing for me was that I of course grabbed the bar as it flew up and slammed it back down, getting it much tighter than I'd planned and triggering a pretty awful claustrophobic attack for the rest of the attraction. Not fun!

My guess is that the rider may have been 'shaken' from his experience at the time, but, since he wasn't visibly hurt and was able to walk off the ride on his own accord, the cast members who were there may have just dismissed the incident, rightfully or not. Later on, after the incident occurred, I'm betting that the rider began to notice the pain from what may have happened. It's possible then the OP and husband may have felt that more needed to be done. In a separate occurance at a different park last summer, I fell while trying to exit from a log flume boat. I didn't fall hard, and immediately got up. It was more embarrasing to me than anything else. The ride operator came over to assist me, but, I was already standing. He questioned me if I was ok, which I was. I then continued to enjoy the park. The next morning, though, I discovered that I had bruised my ribs on my left side. I didn't notice the pain until the next morning, which can happen with some injuries. I was sore for a few days, but nothing more and I didn't need medical attention for it. I never even thought of contacting the park on the incident, even though my ribs were hurting enough later on to possibly get them x-rayed. After a week or so, the pain subsided and eventually dissappeared. I just brought this up because I'm wondering if the husband noticed pain immediately, or did it start to appear later on? If it came later on, maybe this is why Disney management was a little less receptive to it.

The sensors in the tracks do all of the safety stuff for them, but I doubt that there's anything to sense the lapbars beyond the sharp eyes of the load/unload crew.

As far as I know there are no sensors in the trains themselves to indicate a lap bar opening. I know that even a hat falling on the track in the right place can trip the zone sensors and cause an attraction to stop because the sensors think there is more than one vehicle in a zone. And yes, I know that computers don't "think." I always get laughed at by tech support when I say things like that... "My computer thinks I'm trying to log off, but I'm not!"

I've mentioned it before, but what if this happened on something like ToT (I know this no longer has lapbars but seatbelt unbuckling etc.) or RRC??? I mean, this could/would be fatal! To treat it like "no big deal" because somebody wasn't seriously injured seems careless to me. Too many "what if's" to count why this is not only newsworthy, but also cause for a ride to be shut down for a day! Maybe it's just me but I don't care if I stood in line for an hour, if a cm came out and told me that I couldn't go on space mountain because a lapbar unlatched and it needed to be investigated, I would not only NOT be upset, I would THANK them for taking care of it and putting the safety and comfort of the guests ahead of everything else! This seems so unusual to me that this is seen as not a big deal and an ordinary occurance...guests throwing up on M:S is newsworthy, yet lapbars becoming unlatched is brushed under the carpet and never mentioned or taken care of.

They're not meant to keep people from being ejected from the ride due to positive or negative g forces. And as far as TOT, there ARE seatbelt sensors on the right hand side of the vehicle. Many motion rides (such as star tours) have them because they create 'popping' motions that can 'pop' (eject) you from your seat. Everest has no such motion, but rather short but sustained positive and negative G forces.

But this coaster has several inversions.
