I woke up to hear the interview (I have the stream from WCVB on) in time to hear that comment. I posted earlier about worrying what the reaction was going to be. Mainly, because I don't think this is going to be radical Islam like we're used to. They will probably find out they had made some connections with some terrorist group. And I wouldn't be surprised if they find accomplices who are radical Islam like we're used to. And people will be all, "radical Muslims." But this still has a bit of a feeling of punk kids ala Columbine who went down the "bad path" closest to them. If their heritage was different, the "bad path" would have looked different, maybe a gang, surpremisist group, etc...is this making any sense? But I admit that probably has a lot to do with preconceptions regarding attacks usually being suicide attacks, and these guys jihad didn't seem to include suicide. And they came to the US while they were kids, not people who grew up somewhere hating America, being indoctrinated and sent to the US to do something. Like I said, those are my preconceptions, so I'm not going to fight too hard one way or another. I'm just not ready to draw the line that we have another "radical Islam" problem or a "punk kids whose "acting out" of choice was radical Islam." Obviously, both are a problem, but perhaps I am going that way because a "punk kids" problem seems more solvable (but only barely).

The younger brother, as Hans pointed out, was well liked in school and a member of the soccer team. He seemed to fit in with American society quite well. As more details emerge about these two, I strongly suspect the much older brother was the originator of this plan, which his younger brother was unfortunately roped into. I don't see the younger brother harboring enormous hatred for America, given his success both academically and socially since coming here at the age of 8.
