We have had our share of redneck jokes and laugh ourselves silly at Larry the Cable Guy. Because he points out the truths in the stereotypes. If he just stood up there and said, "What a bunch of dumb, stupid, (insert profanity here) rednecks there are down there" I wouldn't even listen. But because he's finding humor, not insulting people, it's funny.

And the real problem that I find with South Park isn't the intelligent people who watch it and GET the humor. It's the scary fact that many adults watch it and say, "hey, yeah, Jews (or put your own group/religion/race here) ARE lame. Hey kids...Jews ARE lame. It's alright to say it out loud now!" It's the idiots who think that South Park is a teaching tool rather than a comedy show that I have the problems with.

Apparently it's O.K. with some people here to disparage people simply because of their religion, race, etc. It's not O.K. with me. That's certainly not to say that there isn't plenty of humor to be found in the truth and in our differences, but saying "black people suck" isn't humor. It's insulting. That's my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.

Now, if you've got some other thing that's layered empty ritual on top of that, it's fine, but that's another discussion.

You could also talk about the Mormons, who think you need to combine your faith with good works, too.

But what makes you a christian? Belief in Christ as your savior. Want to know what doesn't not make you one? Someone else saying you aren't. Nothing is more typically repugnant than when you get one group of superstitious fantasy believers calling another group or an individual not a <fill in the blank>, because this means that this individual doing the accusing somehow has set themself up as judge, jury and executioner on a theocratic level.

They need to figure out their own problems first, which generally are many, before they go around saying what someone else is or is not, simply out of embarassment of association with them.

Actually, no, it's not a load.

Commons speach, behavior, and acts are far more coarse then they were in years past.

This is not to say that things were perfect in years past, but common discourse simply was at a higher level than it is today, and it does not appear to be improving.

Humor is still very subjective and I certainly wasn't touting him as a genius. There are many more comedians out there who are funnier, more clever, and still manage to be funny without insulting people.

Really, I am totally unfamiliar with that as any sort of catch phrase.

I'm also still trying to figure out Cedric The Entertainer, too.

I've never heard of Cedric the Entertainer either. Must be new...I'm out of the American pop-culture loop unless I read it on LP, where I recently discovered some sort of hit show called "American Idol" being discussed here. I gather it's an incredibly popular karaoke contest? Jon, maybe you're right. :p

Thank god, I was feeling utterly out of touch. I think he is EITHER a character in a movie or the name someone is going by. I'm not exactly sure.

AI? Karaoke? It's not that good. I watched it for a while, but have given up on it. I didn't watch the last few episodes this season.

On the other hand, the neat thing is I learn from friends about all these great TV shows that have occured over the past decade or so, and by the time I learn about them and download the show has come and gone...so I can just watch the whole series. :p

I've recently done that with the Sopranos, House M.D., Scrubs, Oz (HBO), The Amazing Race, and MOST recently all six seasons of 24. When I finally caught up with season 6 the season finale came out like three days before I "caught up to it". Perfect timing. :D

He is a rotund, black, 40ish stand up comic who is in several movies now like that horrible Jonhson's Family Vacation, the lower budget like but fairly well done Barbershop with actor/rapper Ice Cube and the stupid Get Shorty part 2. I think he was one of the 5 or 6 all black stand up comic cast in Kings of Comedy, possibly an HBO special.

    You bet!

Larry is quite a big draw now and he is a US household name. He is getting a lot of work in Hollywood and I'm sure he is on the 'A' list and is paid handsomely. His HBO stand up has caught on like a wildfire in the comedic industry much like what Eddy Murphy experienced in his first highly publicized 'Delirious' and then his 'Raw'.

I think you may have spotted that I really don't...most of what passes for entertainment today is so low and crass, I just don't even have a passing interest.

But, Cedric the Entertainer I guess is the name some guy took as his stage name, as opposed to a character in a series of movies.

I heard of Johnson Family Vacation. I did not see it.

Larry the Cable Guy is not a household name in my household. I would not know him if I fell over him.
