Originally Posted By danyoung Most of the main points of difference between the two shows have already been posted in this thread. MGM's version relies way too much on the filmed segments. The villian in a bubble clip seems to go on forever! And there are times when you see film, then 10 seconds of live, then film for 15 seconds, then back to live. It's just incredibly choppy, while DL's version feels like a much smoother execution of flow. The Columbia and the Mark Twain are amazingly important elements to DL's show. The entire show just builds and builds and builds into an incredible finale that gets me every time. MGM's just leaves me cold. It should also be noted that DL's show has taken a couple of hits. They used to have a giant animatronic Ursula float that cruised in front of the crowd. Now it's just an animated segment. Also there used to be a huge Pinnochio scene that's now only animation. These are both very important elements that add to the show, and hurt it when they're gone. But overall, DL's show, even with having to stand, is far superior to the MGM version.

I was at the opening day of Disneyland's Fantasmic!, and have seen it many, many times over the years. I have seen the Disney-MGM version five or six times. I feel that both versions have much to recommend, as well as some drawbacks. My biggest complaint is that neither has a truly clear "through line" to explain what is going on. I agree that the Florida version has film sequences that are much too long-- especially the rising bubbles. The Columbia full of pirates is an outstanding sequence, which has no equivalent in Florida. One really, really minor quibble. At the height of the Princess sequence in Disneyland, the Prince lifts Snow White high into the air and slowly lowers her as she melts into his arms. In Florida, they just keep dancing, despite the swell in the music. Why is this? As far as the seating situation goes, I've always agreed that Florida needs the amphitheater, since most people wouldn't be willing to stand for their version...!

Originally Posted By DlandDug Oh! One other big difference between the two versions. Florida features a lot more contemporary characters. Pocohantas, The Lion King, and Aladdin all have major sequences. The Disneyland version came out just after The Little Mermaid. Hence, many of the more recent films are not represented, except by characters riding the Mark Twain in the finale.

Was this just a temp thing?

Originally Posted By danyoung Good to hear, as the animation was a pretty lame replacement. It's a delicate balance that they have to keep between live effects and animation on the water screen. I felt right from the first time I saw the MGM version that they'd drastically upset this balance, and the show suffered for it. DL has already shoved that balance a bit with the Ursula scene. I know my perspective comes from seeing the big Ursula float, but it sure seems that there's an awfully long time there where nothing's going on but animation.

If DL wanted to, they could have put Percival McLeach in the lineup of Misunderstood Merry-Makers Murdered by Mickey...although I feel that would have REALLY aged the show. As I've mentioned before in the past, I didn't get the chance to see the MGM version while I was there, but I did buy the soundtrack. A few years later, I would be able to watch most of the show via YouTube. Of course we all know what I'm going to be talking about in the new few paragraphs so get comfy. DL's Version: -Snake: Kaa -Splish-Splash Scenes: Monstro -Super Battle: Captain Hook -Roll Call of Misunderstood Merry-Makers Murdered by Mickey: Evil Queen/Hag, Ursula, Chernabog and Maleficent -Roll Call Transition: Obligatory Close-up of the eyes of the Misunderstood Merry-Makers Murdered by Mickey WDW's Version: -Snake: Jafar Cobra -Splish-Splash Scenes: Monstro -Super Battle: Governor John Ratcliffe -Roll Call of Misunderstood Merry-Makers Murdered by Mickey: Evil Queen/Hag, Ursula, Cruella De Vil, Scar, Judge Claude Frollo, Jafar, Hades, Chernabog and Maleficent -Roll Call Transition: Misunderstood Merry-Makers Murdered by Mickey morph into each other...kind of like the morphing portraits in the Haunted Mansion. Interesting. Now since it was only a few months ago when I actually saw the You Tube clips, I assumed that the "deaths" of Cruella, Hades and Frollo would be footage from their actual demises in the film (psycho face, Pit of Death, fall from Notre Dame). I was wrong. I thought the clips they used instead were lame. I found it interesting to have shirtless Pac-Man eyed Mickey in the Cave of Wonders sequence. And here's good ol' Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F antasmic

Oh-- and for a fun blast from the past, here's LP's coverage of Fantasmic!'s 10th anniversary, from 2002: http://www.laughingplace.com/N ews-ID505900.asp

Was that not an AA type of mechanism creating her movements?

Remember when Pocahontas would stand proudly up front, gazing down the River? Or when the Pixar gang came and stayed and stayed? Or the infrequent appearance of a character from the past?
