Last time I stayed at the Shiba Park Hotel or something close to that name--- very reasonable rates for being downtown near the the JR station. We'll pick this up in the Tokyo Resort section before our fellow posters form a lynch mob for using world events.

In fact, London would be very close to the top of my list. It's just one of those cities that has everything. As does NY, where I live now. It's easy to take for granted when you live here. I love both LA and SF. LA is more diffuse and harder to love than SF (or at lot of places), but ultimately it is also a city that has everything and everybody, which I just love, plus a climate that is hard to beat. SF is just fantastic. A city I haven't seen mentioned yet that reminded me a lot of SF was Bergen, Norway. Also on the coast and filled with hills, so every vista was a postcard. Don't know if anyone mentioned Prague yet. Architecturally it's fantastic - when they want to make a movie set in old Europe they often choose Prague. Vienna, for example, doesn't look like old Vienna any more, but Prague does. Yet it's shaken off the shackles of the iron curtain with a vengeance, becoming one of the hippest places on the planet - best guitar player I ever saw was in some little club in Prague - and the energy is palpable. It was similar to the vibe in Madrid and Barcelona when I was there not long after Franco died. Haven't been to either recently enough to include them here, but I suspect they're still great, based on what others have said. I also love Copenhagen, not least for Tivoli, the most Disneyesque non-Disney park, probably, even though it's tiny and low-tech. And great jazz in Copenhagen. Chicago is also great, at least 7-8 months of the year.

The place was packed, mostly drunk holiday makers/stag and hen groups from the British isles. I'd love to go back in the dead of winter.
