I've noticed recently that root beer in plastic bottles doesn't taste nearly as good as cans or glass bottles, but is a lot easier to find. I've also noticed an increasing number of places that have it in their soda fountains, which tastes pretty good too. But, of course, the best one ever has to be my regional favorite: Cheerwine. It's basically cherry soda (not cherry cola; kind of like a cherry smash but not as sweet), and delicious. It's produced in North Carolina and can be found in the border regions of Virginia and South Carolina, but not far past that. If you have it when it's even moderately warm, it just tastes terrible (like cough syrup). But when it's cold, it's nice and crisp and just about the most refreshing drink I think I've ever had. It really makes me sad that it isn't available in other places across the country. (And it also suffers from the same plastic bottle problem as root beer).

I had it in cans a good 20 years ago andit was delicious. I had it in a plastic bottle a couple of years ago and it wasn't anything to write home about. Maybe it is the plastic or my tastebuds have changed. Who knows.
