That's not what I'm asking. I am asking *if* she is fired, will that satisfy people upset by this? Is that sufficient punishment?

Or will they follow where she works next and make an issue of this again?

I know it was a dumb joke. And posting it on FB was beyond dumb. But there is also such a thing as an overreaction as well.

It seems genuine and sufficient to me, but what do I know.

Infinity. Like I said, this is frozen in time now because of social media. For 99.99% of the world, this woman is nothing more than this picture.

Of course people should be smarter than this. Of course if there's repercussions for her employer, they have every right to let her go.

I'm just talking about the larger cultural implications of social media. Every single one of us has done something stupid in our lives. Has it been photographed, posted on the web, then disseminated across the world?

I'm curious what her FB settings are. If her page was private, I find it more offensive that one of her "friends" would make one of her photos go viral.

I get that nothing is every private...but that doesn't excuse the people to use the information they see against others.

I suppose that's my point. This is just another way we have to adjust to the digital age.

I'm really not trying to excuse poor or foolish behavior, just trying to point out that the consequences are often far more severe in this day and age. Twenty years ago, this woman would've done this, the picture would've been developed at the local one hour photo, and that's that. Of course it was tasteless (though I get the attempt at humor) and of course she should be smarter than posting it on Facebook.

Like it or not, our interactions will become increasingly digital, and I don't love the idea of living in a world where no one can make a mistake, be stupid, have a moment's bad judgment, etc.

I remember as a teenager I did something really stupid. It was thoughtless, if ultimately harmless, and I'm embarrassed to this day that I thought what I was doing was funny. But a few of my friends are the only ones who saw it. That was that. If it had been immortalized on Facebook or Twitter, who knows....

Don't we all have those moments? Maybe not, maybe I'm just a fire, ready, aim kinda guy :)

    We are so screwed.

That said, it seems as if boorish and obnoxious behavior have become something of a trend. However, some subjects are taboo.
You don't shout Nazi slogans at a Jewish gathering, and you simply do not mock the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier while at Arlington.

At some point, society will have to adjust. Once the number of people with things like this about them online reaches some critical mass, society won't have a choice but to adapt.

We're already far past the point with politicans in excluding the vast majority of qualified candidates that would do an excellent job because of some issue in their past that the opposition will use to make them unelectable. Although a terrible situation, we can live with it (barely) because there are so few politicans needed. But we can't operate the entire country's work force using the same standard of judgement, as there simply wouldn't be enough workers to go around.

Now that she has been fired, is that sufficient for her "crime" of poor taste and judgement? I bet not. I bet some will keep after her and make waves at wherever she works next.
