No one would have ever paid any attention to an 18 year old girl saying something stupid if a) the Governor's staff weren't stupid enough to make an issue out of what she said and b) if the principal wasn't dumb enough to think there wouldn't be a reaction to his trying to curtail freedom of speech.

I believe (although I am not 100% certain) that unless what she wrote was considered illegal hate speech, a threat of some kind, or harassment (bullying), the school cannot to anything about what she says or posts online outside of school, and even if she posted while in school, the most they could probably bust her for is being on Twitter in school if that is against the rules.

Most political discourse is at that level including here in the WE.

"I hope that the governor realizes the power of the people and how people can make things happen," she said. "I also hope he will spend his time doing more productive things."
    ...
"I hope there won't be any consequences and that my principal and the governor's office can move on," she said. "The issue is relevant and, if anything, is a starting point of dialog with the governor about his policies and how our First Amendment rights can be taken away."

She sounds more mature and reasonable then anyone else involved.

That wasn't the untrue part...she said she told the governor (as in face to face) that he sucks, which she did not in fact do.

"The Shawnee Mission East senior said she did not actually talk to Brownback, and the post referenced a joke she had with a student on the trip."

Maybe she should come to the WE and teach us not to jump to conclusions and attribute assumptions and motivations to 'out of context' communications between friends.

If you believe she wrote that without help I imagine you'd be wrong.

if i would have written the above, then i would have used the word #writing# instead of #written# and i would have inserted an #i# right after the #c# in the word #sufficent#. but then again if this were some formal forum then i would use capital letters where needed and proper quotation marks instead of pound signs.

i'm lowden and this is fun hehehehehehe

    3) Members of a public forum where plenty of threads state that certain politicians are idiots and that their supporters and policies suck somehow feel that their 'adult' level of debate is somehow more mature then an 18 year old tweating to her 65 followers that her governor sucks.

Instead of discussing the fact that a governmental worker hunts down the authors of tweets they don't like or talking about the fact that a principal of a high school seems to need to take a few civic classes himself... member here have:

Called the tweeter a lier ( although reading the articles make it clear she didn't literally imply she said it to his fact)

Implied a cashiers job lies in her future. ( although in her interviews she comes across as intelligent as any 18 year old does)

And accused her of using a teleprompter. ( I assume SPP knew those quotes came from a televised interview and not a written statement. )

Call me crazy but somehow I get the feeling I'm the only one here that bothered to find a kansas source to get a more 'in depth' view of the story.

That is possible in public schools? To a certain degree I can understand that other theories are also taught, but banning evolution from a public school is a little bit too much for me.

This was a school sponsored field trip. The principal had every right to discipline her.

She had every right to tweet to her friends whatever she believed about Brownback. Doesn't matter if it was done during a school field trip, event, or even on school property. It's still considered private communication of an adult utilizing personal property. Her civil rights were clearly violated.

For what? Having a poor view of the educational policies of the Government she just heard speak?

I guess people don't like the word 'suck' but quite honesty I'm in my 40s and never swear but I say things suck all the time... especially politicians.

Again if the Principal felt that she was not representing the school in a manner that was fit, he had every right to discipline her. Doesn't matter if she's 18 either. If a faculity member did the same thing, the Principal would have the same right.
