Entirely supposition on my behalf but I suspect it had something to do with the composer on the movie too - Marc Shaiman did an amazing job on the movie and went on to bigger and better things too (like that little musical Hairspray). I can't imagine that Marc and Alan would gel well as a team!

I probably sound like I'm anti-Menken which couldn't be further from the truth. I adore his work on King David - just beautiful music. Hunchback is probably my favorite score of all time (Heaven's Light/Hellfire is his best song ever IMHO). I just don't see the same quality in his stuff this past decade (although I did like Enchanted's music - especially So Close).

Gotcha. We ARE talking about two different things. The good news is, yes the song is quite specific to the plot of the movie, though being the "liftable ballad," it won't get too specific. If you heard Kiss the Girl, A Whole New World, or Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and weren't told what they were from, you'd never in a million years guess from the lyrics. The references to the plot of the movie are only obvious in the context of the movie.

I See the Light is in that category. The other songs in Tangled are more Part-of-Your-World Under-the-Sea-ish.

I'm not into Broadway in the slightest, so all this talk of Sister Act and Leap of Faith is zinging right by me, nor do I have I See the Light in heavy rotation on the iPod. My point in posting it was that it's final clenching proof, for those who still doubted, that Tangled is not the Flynn and the Blonde show, and it is most definitely not Shrek.

And my point in post 37 was that it's not the only thing in Tangled that's "very derivative" of Disney past.

I still think most moviegoers will love it IF they can be corralled into the theater. But with the exception of Gothel, there's not much new ground being broken.

I'd like to. Any tips for downloading? I'll be buying the soundtrack as soon as I can.

I definitley want to agree with mawnck that it is very specific to the film and what is going on, but at the same time works on other levels. I think that's part of what makes the film so strong, since it manages to work on a surface level, but it has a lot of depth and greater meaning to it. It isn't just about Rapunzel and Flynn, but there really does seem to be one of those connections to everybody in the audience. It manages to grab on to everybody's desire to go out and be adventurous and do something hopelessly romantic, and take that urge and use it as fuel for the plot. It is modern. There are jokes. But at the heart of it, it is still the classic princess story that has worked for so many generations.

Menken often steals from himself. Hell, "Part of Your World," thematically and at least partially musically, essentially IS "Somewhere That's Green" from Little Shop of Horrors.

Compare especially the "power points" of the two songs (the part leading up to the title).

Compare "Out of the Sea/Wish I Could Be/Part of that world" with "Far from Skid Row/I dream we'll go/Somewhere that's green."

As a songwriter I notice these things, but still - I remember sitting in the audience of LM, with my jaw slightly open, thinking to myself "That's 'Somewhere That's Green'" (!). But realizing that it works nonetheless.

Btw, according to Menken, only one song from "Tangled" will be submitted for Oscar consideration, and that's "I See the Light".

The other songs, while also well done and a lot of fun, aren't quite as memorable or overwhelmingly impressive. There were several points during the song where my jaw literally dropped due to the change in tone and visuals from the rest of the film. It's the right one to push for an Oscar.
