"It's a Wonderful Life" truly does have a dark, creepy undercurrent. I believe that's one reason it has resonated and endured. The film is not just a sweet li'l Christmas story-- it's deep and meaningful. The two scenes that always affected me deeply were the proposal (where George is fiercely holding Mary and saying "I'm never marrying anyone!") and the scene where he returns home and terrifies the family. It's so heartbreaking and distancing at the same time.

Frank Capra, the producer/director, was undergoing an incredible rough patch in his life at the time he made the film. Much of his own angst was poured into both the screenplay and direction. It is odd to me that many people criticize It's a Wonderful Life for its sentimentality. Far more valid, in my opinion, is Pixie's observation that it really is rather dark and subversive.

    LOL!

I love that. The exclamation point adds the perfect ironic humor of annually-irrelevant enthusiasm.
