Saying that it's "silly" isn't much better, but at least you frame it as being your opinion. We are a long way off from full equality in this country. How long will it be before we have a transgender congressperson or a gay president? "Gay Days is different from Bats Day or cheerleading events in that those people are coming together because of a common interest" Minority groups don't have a common political interest in furthering their rights? Frankly I think any group, particularly one that has been oppressed - whether it be the LGBT community, women, Irish Americans, midgets or whatever - ought to have events to celebrate who they are if they want to.

Originally Posted By SpokkerJones "We are a long way off from full equality in this country." To be more accurate, I am for equality of opportunity, not equality. I do not think full equality is always achievable in terms of outcomes (income, education, etc.) For example, the raw wage gap between women and men will probably persist because of individual choices people make (hours worked, professions chosen, and all that). But if the wage gap ever got to the point where it was favoring women, then so be it. I wouldn't feel that it would be some national crisis that we had to "fix." As it stands, more women are in college than men and this is seen as a good thing, not a negative thing, by most people. As far as gays go, I don't see many differences. I see most gay people living similar lives and achieving similar outcomes (incomes, education, etc.) as straight folk. And gays are not a hivemind. Hell, here's a gay guy who is speaking out against gay days. http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-...days.htm "How long will it be before we have a transgender congressperson or a gay president?" It's irrelevant because being gay (or a woman, or black, or whatever) has nothing to do with one's ability to do the job, or so we are told growing up. Therefore, why does it matter who the president is and what their background is? I vote for the person who I think has the ability to do the job and holds similar beliefs that I do (the two mainstream candidates fulfill neither of those requirements, I might add). "Minority groups don't have a common political interest in furthering their rights?" I feel identity politics does more harm than good. I could easily join La Raza and MeCHA and spread divisiveness and scream racism and take back the Southwest for Mexico and all that, and few would bat an eyelash around here, but I think it's wrong even if I might benefit from it. And in politics, I am annoyed when a politician has a specific message for almost every group. You might see a politician say something different in English than they do in their Spanish materials. Why is it set in stone that the white voters in general want different things than the Hispanic voters? Here in North Orange County we have plenty of Latino Democrats and Latino Republicans, as well as a bunch who specify no preference. If you really want to get honest, I think it is incredibly racist, and this is an idea that is promoted by the mainstream media (the same who talk about what a racist country this is), that it is a done deal that Hispanics will vote Democrat, and that Republicans must be something special to reach Latinos. If I got offended by anything in politics, and I don't, it would be that.

Should Laughing Place start a "black at Disney" or "Eskimo at Disney" forum? Yeah, I stand by calling all these pride groups ridiculous and silly.

Several people came on here to take you to task over your remarks, but don't let the facts f you up. You made gratuitous remarks about a large group of people you know sh*t about, and it was wrong. What's a shame is you perpetuated the derailment of this thread.

Your attitude was based on an INCORRECT assumption that I had no knowledge or experience to base my opinion on. Secondly, "two" does not equal "several", and TWO is how many people "took me to task" at the tone of my remarks: you and tasha. And tasha's problem seemed to be that she thought I was being mean for saying what I did whether or not I thought that way. Third, I DID NOT make "gratuitous remarks about a large group of people" that I knew nothing about. I made remarks about the people that I had SPECIFIC knowledge and experience of, and phrased it precisely that way. Saying that my opinion was of the people I HAD KNOWN there. NOTHING you or anyone else can say or do can change that. That is my experience. Again, you don't have to like it but it is based on REAL TIME SPENT THERE and is therefore a VALID OPINION that I am entitled to. All you did was reinforce my attitude that Angelenos tend to be more egocentric and obsessed with appearances in general than most other people I've known over the years criss-crossing this country. But like you said, "don't let the facts f you up"! As far as the "she" remark goes - that was just my way of expressing that I didn't take you very seriously from the get-go, and the more you ranted and raved the less seriously I took you. You certainly haven't improved my opinion of Angelenos any. As I said, there have been exceptions, but I'll not be adding you to that list anytime soon. I'll make this my last post on the matter since you seem to be unable or unwilling the see the facts of the conversation in any way other than skewed to your own narrow, hot-headed view. Have a Magical Day!
