However, it's also widely published that MSEP took a hiatus in 1975 & 1976 for America on Parade, which ran once in the afternoon and once at night. When MSEP returned in 1977, the original 2D floats were replaced with the 3D ones we have today, presumably including the US flag one. But since the parade wasn't running during the actual bicentennial, it's hard to say that's why the float was added right?
