I read a story last night about this and literally tried it today.

I won't recite the story, but I will tell you what I did armed with what the story had said.

After my last posts today, I called a babysitter, (next door) and lined up a tee time for me and my 11 yr old son to go back out and complete our round. We did the back nine this AM and I had the 9 of MY LIFE!!!

We decided to now play the front 9 which is significantly more challenging than the back. We checked in, and off we went... not a single other golfer in sight.

We played the 1st hole, an easy Par 4. Straight shot to an elevated green 352 from the Blue Tees. I scored a 5...and on we marched. My son began taking all sorts of second, third, fourth and more shots, but not really counting them per se.

We played on and I smiled as I wrote down the scores he told me he had...such as a 6 on the par 3 that he took maybe 9 to get up and 5 putts, but I wrote down what he told me. He was playing from the Silver (par 3) tees.

On the 9th Tee he walked out onto the tee box with me. It is an elevated Tee Box that falls off in all directions and has a beautiful view of a water down the left side of the fairway, with a nice wide oval green 192 yards straight ahead and lower than the tee by maybe 40 feet. It is a darned easy and simple hole yet so many golfers get freaked out by all that water on the left...they either end up hitting into it anyway (the water is the entire length of the fiarway and goes past the green on the left) or slicing way off right.

His tee, the silver tee, was some 98 yards closer to the green, but he was keeping me company and helping me watch my ball.

I explained to my son that I was playing an okay round, and that this hole was a great one to keep the pace going. "If I can only par this one, I will be in okay shape." At this point I was a solid 17 strokes over which brought me back down to Earth after this AM, but he didn't really know exactly what my score was and I doubt at this point he cared.

Anyway I set up with my 3 Hybrid and I hit a nice relaxed smooth shot that sailed, but very quickly began hooking to the left into the monster water. My son said to me, "Holy cow that ball is gone, you'll never see IT again."

I replied, "Darn, what a shame...now I have to take a penalty and am about to hit my third stroke."

He quickly argued that I should not count that shot. Afterall probably no one else saw me, and it would be just as easy to hit again, pretending that last shot did not count.

I looked at him, studied his face a moment longer than typical, and said, "You are right son, but the true measure of a man can be found in what he CLAIMS to be truth, especially when no one else is around."

I hit a perfect drive, long, high, straight, which fell just shy but bounced right up onto the green maybe 12 feet from the pin. It was beautiful and pure LUCK.

I turned to him and said, "See? That's the rub of the green son, it giveth and it taketh away. But let me tell you a secret. It'll give more than take if you be honest."

And off we went on our cart, him thinking it over, me feeling like I had the wisdom of Solomon. I ended up FOUR putting and had to take a dreaded 7 on this Par 3!

When we got in, I checked our clubs in and we rode up to the grill. We were sitting alone in the place at the bar, drinking Coke, eating candy bars. My son looked over at me and said, "Dad, did you take that penalty stroke?" I replied yes. He then said, "I think we shouldn't count my score today." I said, "Okay son, that sounds fine to me."

How about next week we give it another shot.

I remember going with my uncle when I was young and having to give my score at the end of the hole...and early on I do remember maybe 'forgetting' a stroke here or there...my uncle would only look at me, raise an eyebrow and say " so 6 is what you had huh?" and then write it down and move on...it didn't take me long ( you don;t have to hitme with a 2 x 4 more than once to get it ) - to figure out he probably always knew what score I had...so let's pony up the real deal. And when I was first learning some of those scores were doozies ( and no good doozies ! ) --

I also remember playing matches in high school , and my junior year when we finished 2nd in the state, we were playing a team that was significantly weaker than us. Now mind you it is all match play, so your scores count only to keep records...

Now where the 4 of us shot anywhere from 66 ( yeah that was the state amateur champ) to 77-78 for our number 4 -- this team's best player was probably mid 80's and their worst about 110....so this was not close. They told us their coach was so hard on them that if they lost a hole to us ( and they lost them all ) - if we had a 4 could they take a 5 so that their scores would look better even though they lost.... it was so sad...... we turned the other way but I remember it being zero enjoyment...and even though we shut them out...it was one match I'd like to forget.....

That is something you just can't do is change the course. Afterall, 200 yards is 200 yards no matter who is playing it. The thing truly is amazing and will bring me along much faster.

personal preferences I know...but that is why I like it the best ( the Mickey trap on 6 just a bonus )

Ahh so THAT'S where that is!

Yeah many Florida courses are flat as grandma's griddle. Although I am sure there are many that aren't.

For REAL elevation try the City of Gatlinburg Municipal Course (which is actually in Pigeon Forge). The course has severe elevation changes including a par 3 with a 200' drop from tee to green. I'm not sure what is more fun: the tee shot of the ride down the side of the mountain in the cart.

I'll bet their cart maintenence is expensive, on brakes at least.

On the 17th tee, the husband was starting his backswing when the wife blurted out, "I'm sorry dear, I've been so conscience-stricken since you told me but, since we are being honest with each other I have something to tell you. 52 years ago I had a sex change operation; I was a man before I met you. The husband froze at the top of his backswing and then threw a fit. he slammed the club into the ground, kicked the ball into the woods, stormed off the tee, pushed the golf cart on its side, broke the rest of his clubs and then started on hers. He screamed and ranted, "You liar! You cheat! You despicable deceiver! How could you? I trusted you with all my heart and soul....

Yup, golf is a serious game.
