Pretty much. However, it wasn't supposed to be that way. Tony Hayward had been given the questions in advance and was expected to testify for the record on what went down leading up to the explosion. In his arrogance he simply pretended to not know what decisions were made and refused to give any information on what actions the company took that caused the accident. You might want to ask yourself how is it that the members of Congress who queried him seemed to know more about how and why the explosion happened than he did.

<<Svanberg [BP's Chaiman] also said that comments by Hayward have had detrimental effects as the company seeks to control the fallout from the disaster.

"It is clear Tony has made remarks that have upset people," Svanberg said.>>

It has been that way for a while. Congress use their five minute to pontificate about whatever the topic is and then tack a question on to the end of their rant (usually a question that has already been asked by every other congressman that has preceded them) and then the person being asked the question then either answers vaguely or does not answer at all and then the next congressman goes and it continues for days at a time.

When you consider that very little is every learned at these hearings I really think they are conducted for the sole reason that congressmen need to look like they are "doing something" about a problem.

And people wonder why nothing of substance ever gets done in this country...Congressmen are too busy giving the appearance that they are doing something and don't have the time to actually do anything.

If it's all about busywork and jobs, those drillers could start laying down some railroad track and stringing up catenary wire.

Allow me to engage in reckless behavior resulting in immense negative externalities to society, but you can't punish me because I have employees.

    Bingo.

One minute we're told the government shouldn't step in to save companies because of the free market. The next we're told companies should survive just to help their employees.

BP going under would be the free market at work.

Yes, which begs the question why haven't the government agencies responsible for the oversight of BP (you know, the people who rubber stamped the documents for the work BP was doing) called into the hearing as well? Are they going to be questioned?
