They did do a refurbishment of the spinning sign and it did indeed spin for a short time prior to the "relaunch" of DCA. From what I remember reading somewhere, originally it was going to stay, thus the refurb, but Lassiter or someone thought that it distracted from Buena Vista Street and recommended that it go.

This could work well just off Carthay Circle, don't you think?

I've always been disappointed with the projection on Soarin. It just didn't seem as sharp, clear, or colorful as Imax should be, especially at 48fps. The colors seem muted and it's just not crystal clear. Theoretically, Imax should be much clearer than 4k digital.

I was hoping they would convert Soarin to 3-D 4k.

There suppose to be better digital projection such as digistar - which is designed for domed screens and you get as much as 8k.

I'm not sure that Soarin' is Imax; I think it might just be 35mm on a really really big screen, rather than name-brand 70mm. I know it has been discussed before, but I'm not sure how that was resolved

But I agree that film should be much clearer than digital, especially on that scale. I've often had problems with digital projections, which seem to blur motion. When it's a person moving in front of a stationary background, you don't notice it too much, but when the entire background is moving (like, say, flying over a landscape) it all smears together. That's what happens with several of the shots of Impressions de France in Epcot; the film is crisp and perfect until it gets some quick movement, and then it all goes to heck.

I've never experienced a 4K projector firsthand, but I suspect these problems will persist. With how quickly digital projection continues to progress (several iterations of the definition of "HD", now 4K), it seems like this is a sure-fire way to have it system look really dated in a couple years. Hopefully this works out well, but I'm remaining skeptical at this point

It still happens fairly often in the Epcot version. It's because they didn't want to build a proper cleanroom for the projectors, and instead use a loop of clear film on top of the movie film, which is supposed to blow the dust off of the film before it is projected. The only problem is when dust gets stuck to the clear film (which happens fairly regularly), and then it keeps getting looped through the projector so the audience sees it over and over

I suppose the conversion to digital will make it a non-issue, but this would seem like a good opportunity to finally get around to building that cleanroom

They also had a problem for a while with the clear film loop just stopping for 30 seconds at a time, showing every imperfection of the film scratches. This happened in WDW and in DL for about 6 months before they got it fixed in all theaters.

I'm sure some do. There are enough visitors at WDW who have also been to DLR who could spot the similarities (though comparatively few DLR visitors make the trek to WDW). The pre-show loop that displays all of the location names is also shown in Epcot, so people who are paying attention might catch on that they're all in California. And I'm sure that most guests would recognize some of the more California-iconic locations like the Golden Gate Bridge, redwood forest, Halfdome, and Napa, but they may not recognize that everything in the film is from California.

Disney never really tried to hide or deny that the film takes place entirely in California, but it just isn't highlighted like in DCA. The terrain is varied enough that it fits The Land pavilion well, though I'm sure that a global film could also work very nicely; it will be interesting to see how that will work at DCA, which has been increasingly losing the California-specific theme for about a decade

Best of both worlds, then.
