And the licensing thing with CBS really a thing? How much could it be?

Or: "Nice IP you got there, CBS. A pity if something should happen to it."

I doubt that's it, but kinda fun to think about.

I had not heard this. The Tokyo TOT does not use the TZ theme I guess that they could switch over the towers to the theme of a cursed idol.

That just means they drop the whole TZ and Rod. Easily changed with the bell hop we hear at loading now telling the story. OR an even easier thing to do would simply be retheme it to DisneySea Tower. Add the evil idol, change the movie TA..DA done.

Monsanto was all over Innerspace but they didn't need to change much when they left and this would be no different.<<

Having a company SPONSOR an attraction is a little different than basing the attraction on an IP, but I see what you're saying. Especially since ToT isn't based on a specific TZ episode. Also, I remember taking a tour of WDI in the early 90s when the attraction was being developed. At the time, they were still working out the deal with CBS and the estate of Rod Serling and they weren't 100% sure that is was going to pan out, so they had a backup plan to just build the ride as the "Hollywood Horror Hotel", with not TZ tie in. Of course, they never had to do that.

It isn't random. That's the difference.

There's really no story to Haunted Mansion - at least none that the guests are (or need to be) aware of. ToT, on the other hand, has a …

    >>pre-show film that explicitly states the backstory for guests<<

… a very bad preshow film with a very lame backstory.

We talk all the time about not buying the storyline in movies, because it's too implausible or it has too many plot holes or they just don't give us any reason to care. Why wouldn't we hold ToT's intro film and subsequent shenanigans to the same standard?

I would have less of a problem with it if it weren't tied in with the Twilight Zone, complete with bogus Rod Serling. It's as if they did a Chuck Jones tribute using nothing but inept flash animation, or a Beatles tribute with a kazoo band.

    >>I do think they missed an opportunity to provide some 'Twilight Zone' type of ending. One of those great zingers that comes in the final moments of the TV show.<<

EXACTLY. THAT'S Twilight Zone. But what we get in ToT is "People got on the elevator and then disappeared. The end." Zounds, what a gripping story! I was on the edge of my seat!

Nuke it. I'll take what's behind the Marvel door, Alex.

Or maybe retheme it to Superstar Limo? ;-)
