I think it gets a bad reputation because it is a lot more stylized and poetic than most animated features. It definately has plot accuracy issues that could understandibly turn people away, but if you just look at it as a movie that isn't really based in the truth, it's great. The stylization of the animation reminds me of a modernized Sleeping Beauty, while the songs really can't be matched. The bold use of color (especially during the Savages Reprise) takes a chance and really succedes with it. I know I would have never suggested it, but it works really well, and that's one of the things that I like about Disney, the willingness to do something bold and out there. Another film that I haven't really seen very many times, but I love the soundtrack, is Hunchback. The music is really dark and moody, which I find gives a very realistic tone to the movie, as opposed to the too common fantasized plots (well, fantasized without a base in reality, since Hunchback is definately fantasy as well). The various songs and scores, especially Heaven's Light/Hell Fire, really make the characters come alive in a way that I don't think has been done in any other animated feature. I will admit that I think I've only watched it about 3 times since it left theaters, but the music will always stick with me.
