I have no fatty pads on the bottoms of my feet (yes, I look perfectly "normal"). If I'm walking too much, i.e., not very much, the bottoms of my feet blister and bleed without my even feeling it. Again, I don't like it when people take advantage of anything. But in this case I'd like to give people the benefit of the doubt. You're right. I don't know a thing about you. But from what you've demonstrated here, I really don't want to know anything more, lol. Btw, I've always thought that WDW limits family to the handicapped person and 5 others. Can anyone enlighten me as to when the policy was changed? All of this hatred is one of the reasons we always rent a car when we go. I agree wholeheartedly that if people would stop taking advantage of the ADA, then those of us who really need it would have a much easier time. For me the dirty looks and nasty comments out loud in public continue almost daily because most of the time I'm not in a wheelchair and don't look "handicapped" whatever that means. I think that this "discussion" has pretty much run its course for me.

Obesity is a national health crisis in this country. It's costing us billions of dollar, but more importantly millions and millions of lives that are cut short before their time. And you want to know what's worse ... what's so pathetic about it? I'll tell you ... It's the fact that it's become politically incorrect to even discuss obesity and morbid obesity ... it's wrong to suggest that those people are either weak and/or mentally ill ... that they are addicted to food like some people are addicted to crack or Jack Daniels or anonymous sex. How many more Fat Is Beautiful talk shows are we going to have? Because fat most defnitely isn't beautiful (OK, that's an opinion). Fat isn't healthy (that's a fact). I have an uncle who is over 400 pounds. He'll die soon. It's a given. A question of when, not if. He knows it, but won't do anything about it. I find that awfully sad ... we've thought about declaring him mentally incompetent and forced into a facility and/or surgery, but decided it is his life. And another member of my family died of similar causes. It's vicious and it isn't healthy ... and I'm tired of seeing people make excuses because it makes them feel better ... and if you don't think it's an epidemic Nikki, than you are visiting a place other than WDW when you decend on Central Florida because I've never seen such obesity anywhere (and I'm including cast too). So, that's why I tend to bring it up. Any other questions?

If you're saying it's not that important in the big picture, I agree 100%. But I'd also say the same of anything here on LP.com ... this isn't about kids coming home from Iraq without limbs due to a war our prez started ... this isn't about kids being born with HIV ... this isn't about the slaughter going on in Africa ...etc ... we're here talking about Disney. And in this case Disney transport and a system that isn't working ...

The story is about a man who happens to be in a wheelchair and how he met his wife, she is in a wheelchair also, online. She is from China and when he went to meet her they got married. They had come for a visit to the States and she was amazed at the accommodation that was made for them. She told a story about being unloaded from a plane in China and the waiting passengers had to wait for them. As they came off the plane the waiting passengers called them names like pig and said they should be ashamed of themselves for being out in the public. Is this what we in the States are going to be like also? I am sorry people took advantage of this situation but many who have posted in the thread have no clue what the life of a disabled person is. My hope for you all is you never have to be.

So why TRY and live as long as possible by engaging in healthy behavior and a healthy lifestyle? Doesn't matter, right? >>>we've thought about declaring him mentally incompetent and forced into a facility and/or surgery, but decided it is his life.<<< <<And yet another thing to be thankful for, I'm not a member of your family! Second, if my uncle was a heroin addict and we wanted to have him committed and force him to recover like many families do, would you have the same problem? I doubt it. Since he wants to eat himself to death with Big Macs, pizza, donuts, candy and anything else you can think of, it's somehow wrong to do likewise? get over yourself and your indignation. It's misplaced. Oh, and FYI, when people find out who my family is, they usually want to be a part of it!!!

I have no clue about what it's like to be a woman. I have no cluse what it's like to be a white person. I have no clue about what it means to be a soldier. But I can still have some opinions about abortion, equality, and war. I don't think most people are intentionally trying to be unaccommodating towards disabled people, and I think a lot of this misunderstanding is because it has been drummed into our heads that disabled people just wanted to be treated "normally." Do we accommodate, or give preference? That's what it boils down to... I think.
Originally Posted By beamerdog >> Do we accommodate, or give preference? That's what it boils down to... I think.<< Now, this is a very interesting point - and well taken. Are we accomodating by giving preference? My experience has been that only in certain instances accomodation is *only* able to be achieved by giving preference. ONLY in certain instances. The problem is that each handicapped individual needs varying levels of accomodation. And how does a corporation the size of Disney develop a policy for such a diverse population? To inform, in the real world preference is not usually the form accomodation takes. Substandard seating is the norm. Long waits are standard. I've actually been denied access to restaurants and stores. Disney is unique in this respect and probably why it attracts many families who include handicapped individuals. The backlash has only occurred in recent times with the proliferation of wheelchair/ecv abuse. I'm clueless as to a serious solution to this other than restrictions placed on rentals which could also cause a major uprising. *sigh*

It is easy to be judgemental when one's metabolism works for them instead of against them. Just let everyone live their own lives and you live yours. The number of people that you are referring to that are inconveniencing others because of their weight is way fewer then you attempt to preach to us about. As Redd Foxx once said, "all you health fanatics are going to feel pretty silly laying in a hospital bed dying of nothing."

When we asked to use the handicap accessible access, several times we were directed to the right entrance with warning that only 5 others could go. Luckily there was, so our party could stay together. Should wheelchairs be able to get in front of the people on the bus? Absolutely...but they should enforce how many people could go with them there too.
