Seriously... I'm loving this "older and wiser" thing, or whatever it is. I'm learning to relax. I have a better perspective on what's important. But still... I thoroughly loved it a few weeks ago when the coaster train I was sitting in was SHOT out of the gate, climbed a 40-story-tall tower, and fell straight-down back to the earth. Hearing current dance tunes makes it hard for me to stay still. I don't have problems connecting with teen-age clients I see. I've always thought that celebrating birthdays is a happy once-a-year excuse to express appreciation for the BD person -- including when that person is me. The number of the birthday has never been the focus of it for me, nor a source of discomfort. I'm happy to say that that's truer than ever now, even as the number climbs higher.

Out of a local circle of eight friends, five of us have birthdays in September or October. The eight of us used to have week-end gatherings regularly, terrorize Las Vegas occasionally, and do other things spontaneously. Alas, our "adult" time together has become rare and precious since three of the four couples have had kids. But we still maintain a tradition of coming together annually to celebrate our "fall" birthdays. So this Saturday evening we'll have the oldest kid babysit the other kids and we adults will go out for a nice, long, relaxed dinner. That'll be the "celebration" part for me, and it will be wonderful.
