Right, because there's a national chain of Disneyland Hotels where every property replicates the original in Anaheim in every detail. "Given that most people spend relatively little time of the vacation awake in their hotel rooms (3-4 hours per day at most), it also seems like a pretty logical place to cut costs, without having a huge impact on the quality of your vacation." You can also cut costs by not going to DLR at all and doing something else - or just stay at home. Why is it so baffling that a person (another Disney fan in fact) would shell out money for a Disney hotel while you happily shell out money for other things that Disney offers, most of which are equally as frivolous and overpriced. "I don't really agree that the hotel prices are on par with the admission. A park hopper for a few days is still less expensive than a one night stay at the DLH." I never meant to imply that they are on a par with hotel rates. What I'm saying is that the admission prices are over inflated just like the hotel rates are. Bottom line is it isn't fair to single out hotel patrons and call them suckers when most of Disney's offerings are expensive or overpriced. "I don't think it's worth it, but It really isn't my business if people are willing to pay for it and are happy doing so." That's exactly what I think when I see people trading pins or buying the pictures they sell at the exit of attractions. lol

How many photos of Ann and I at a table in the Royal Palace do we need? The ones we already have sit in a drawer. Somewhere. I could probably find them if I really looked for them.

However, I think a Hilton is much more similar to the Disneyland Hotel than any other non-Disney theme park in the world is to Disneyland. Other than some framed photos on the walls in public spaces, there's relatively little theming to that hotel (or PPH) that make it special. With the CGH, or the Moderates and Deluxes at WDW, there's a lot more there that a traditional hotel can't compare with; but to me, the DLH and PPH aren't all that different from any other hotel of similar quality (with the pools being the possible exception). In order to afford vacations, we must make some compromises. Some people don't visit as often, some people would rather go elsewhere; for a large number, it seems that staying at a non-Disney hotel is a pretty good way to save some money while still having a nice vacation to Disney parks.

(And don't do the math about how many coke bottles go into one night at the GCH... not everything is logical or zero-sum on a vacation.)

Who can disagree with this? It's a reasonable point to make about something as frivolous as a trip to Disneyland. However, there are a couple of people here (not you) attempting to apply some kind of moral judgement regarding personal cost decisions people make about their Disney vacations.

Even meals in the park aren't that unreasonable, and you have the option of bringing your own food and drink. The hotel situation is another matter entirely. Of course I recognize your right to stay anywhere you want, despite the costs.
