This is such a good point. WDW used to feel VERY futuristic, and not just in EPCOT. The TTC, the tech used around the resort...

...Now it's all covered over with pixie dust. (Like the TTC.) Bring that feeling back.

The California Grill should be packed up piece by piece and sent to the Smithsonian as a cultural example to future Americans of "Trendy Mid-1990's Restaurant". Please don't diss my favorite WDW dining location when I am in Tokyo and don't have time to defend it properly!

While the dining room could definitely use a makeover, it isn't dire and I 'think' one is coming, but the food remains top-notch.

And the latest room renovation was very well done. High end looking ... quality ... but also nothing that any boutique/W wannabe doesn't have.

They simply used the half of the loop that didn't run through/over the construction site, and ran the rails in shuttle mode. On not-too-busy days during the DCA construction, they would run one train from the DTD station, past the DL main entrance and into the park. When it dropped off its passengers, it then did the whole thing in reverse to get back to the DTD station.

On busier days, they would run two (load one and send it off, load the second one and send it off, unload the first one and move it past the end of the station, unload the second one and reload it and send it back to DTD, reload the first one and send it back to DTD, repeat) , but that system wasn't used during the Subs construction, so I don't know if there is a reason they stayed away from it. That was also during the time that DL was getting new vehicles, so they may have been at reduced capacity anyway.

From my understanding, running the shuttle during the DCA construction caused significant wear and tear on the vehicles, since they had to go through the 'spaghetti bowl' over Autopia in both directions. As far as I know, it wasn't as big of a concern with the straightaway in DCA during the Subs construction, so it may not apply to the WDW rails.

Also, even on the best days, the DL system is little more than an attraction. The capacity is miserable and they are very slow to load. I don't know if the same system would even be feasible for WDW. They could always bring over some extra FriendShips and other boats from around property to increase the ferry capacity, but it would be a tough time. They could also run busses from TTC to the MK hotel bus dropoff area, but I'm afraid if they do that, they will never stop it again. Certainly a very interesting predicament.
