Officially they give you about an hour to arrive, but we showed up about 10 minutes before the show and got great spots (though it helped that we were assigned to a good area). None of the viewing areas were very crowded, but the CMs were pretty strict about policing it so nobody snuck under the ropes. It led to some awkward moments when people tried to get spots, only to be turned away from a less-than-half-full show, on one of the busiest days of the year

The last time I was there I literally got a decent unobstructed spot for the show (on the Pirates bridge near The French Market) a few minutes after the show started. If I had kids or someone short had been with me it would have been impossible to see, but we were fine, and crowd control kept the path behind us clear, so no one was behind us pushing to see. I think what has happened over the years is that Fantasmic has lost some its crowd to WoC because I can't imagine getting a good spot on a summer night 10 years ago. Paint the Night will probably siphon even more folks from the audience.

Being able to have quality shows, parades and fireworks included is pretty great when you think about it.
