For future reference, I put fat jokes on the same level as gay jokes. Society has decreed that gay jokes are mostly uncool. Maybe it'll catch up on the fat issue someday . . .

It doesn't take much time to leave the park and go to your room and change. I think I have stated this in a post before but I believe all disney personel including management need to be retrained and the bar reset. this isnt universal studios or other orlando parks it's disney and that should mean something.

Appropriate or not? No one questioned my attire, or looked at me like I was trash, but I wonder if I met the dress code - I know I was unsure when I walked up to the desk to see if I could get in.

I would not feel comfortable dining at the California Grill in shorts and sneakers. I don't think they're that bad, though compared to what some spirits will wear. I dressed that way when the Grill was open for lunch way back in 1995 (yeah, it was ... and I wish it still was!). But for a fine dinner in a high-end restaurant, I think people should dress.

I just think there is a pervasive 'tude among guests that 'I paid X-thousands of dollars for my magical WDW vacation and I'll eat wherever I please, while dressed however I please.' It's just part and parcel of the WalMarting of America moreso than WDW.

I just can't imagine people dressing in shorts and trying to get into the Gulf Coast Room (the Contemporary's old gourmet resturant on the second floor) or for the Top of the World dinner show in the 1970s and 80s and being allowed in.

Anyway, I personally wouldn't look down on anyone wearing shorts to the Grill, provided they were nice, but I would wonder 'Gee, would it have killed you to at least put on a pair of dressy jeans?'

    1. Only went because I couldn't get into something (anything) at MGM; and

    2. Didn't bring anything but shorts (came over for the weekend [NFFC convention, but as a spouse of an attendee]) and so couldn't dress "appropriately". In fact, I felt uncomfortable asking for a spot, but the CMs at the counter couldn't have cared less. They only wanted to let me eat there - which is commendable in and of itself.

And then you find people who won't acknowledge that any jeans can be dressy enough for fine dining. One of the things that makes WDW so unique to me is the fact that you can indeed be a bit more casual in your attire when you dine. If a restaurant sets a more strict code of dress (like V&A's), then it's reasonable for folks to stick to it. But as long as the California Grill will allow me in in my nice shorts, polo shirt and sneakers, I'm a happy diner!

I see it more on cruises too. Even on FORMAL night, most cruise lines will let people enter the dining rooms in jeans and sneakers.

Believe me, Danny, I am not big on 'dressing up' ... I think the only time I wasn't in shorts on my last trip was when I went to the Grill. But when I rode up in elevator with some dude wearing jean shorts, a tee, loads of tattoos and gold on his teeth, I couldn't help but think 'Did the Grill go ghetto?' And while the guy likely was just going to the bar, I think he was very inappropriately dressed. The CM who took us upstais clearly thought the same from her looks, but she didn't say a word, either.

There's a simple answer, and you know it as well as I do - money. Gotta keep that customer happy, no matter what. I think the CG would do just fine with enforcing the moderate dress code that they have, but Disney's too afraid of offending anyone.

The same can be said for the rest of the time in the USA... where no one has any sense of fashion anymore. Hence the rest of the World looks down on the UA as the pigsty country it has become. Is there any class left anywhere?

    People normally establish opinions like
that because of their ignorance. Our culture is much different than other places in the world. I would hope that people realize our society is different from theirs. Not better, not worse, just different. Besides I don't think I'm ready to allow how the rest of the world thinks about my country to influence how I dress. There is a time, and a place for casual dress, as well as a more formal dress. When the one world government takes over I guess they can tell us what's right, and what's wrong, and how to dress. Until then I will decide for my self.

There's plenty of class left in this great country. You must be hanging around the wrong kind of people. I am not yet ready to condem an entire country because of the foolishness of a minority of the people.
